Mick Stringer Shooting For Maiden Thousand Double

Mangalore trainer will be shooting for a unique double when smart chaser Spiritual One contests the $7,500 thetote.com.au Hobart Maiden Thousand Final at Park on Thursday night.

“I won the Maiden Thousand Final as an owner back in 2003 with the bitch My Tiger Lily,” he explained on Monday.

“I wasn't training at the time and David Crosswell prepared her for me, but this time I am hoping to win the race with a member of my team, which will give me as big a thrill if I am successful .”

Spiritual One, a son of Run's House, ran the fastest qualifying time (26. 35) in last week's Maiden Thousand Semi-Finals and has drawn the black box in Thursday night's prestigious event.

“I would have preferred to draw closer in, but in saying that it could have been much worse and I give Spiritual One a great winning chance,” Stringer explained.

“He crashes down at the start, but I believe that Paua Of Darkness in the yellow box does the same thing which may mean that he misses any early interference.”

The astute trainer also believes that Spiritual One may have benefited from recent racing, meaning that he may be ready to reveal his true potential.

Owned by David Burnett, Spiritual One had three runs in Victoria before being transferred to the Stringer complex in late October.

“When he arrived at my kennels he had some problems, but we sorted them out and he has been impressive in winning his only two starts for me,” Stringer explained.

The trainer is no stranger to big race success, having provided the 2008 quinella with the top chasers Little Spaniard and .

Meanwhile local trainers Keith Nicholls and Russell Watts have both two runners for Thursday night's rich event.

Nicholls will be represented by bitch Pure Doll, which won her Semi- Final in 26.65 and Where's Pedro bitch Pretty Pearl, which qualified in 26.72.

Watts, who will make the long trip to Hobart from Moorleah in the far West, will be represented by Seductive Miss (26.85), a daughter of and Royal Garden ( 26.69), a daughter of Pure Octane.

Early markets on the Maiden Thousand Final suggest that the New South Wales chaser Paua Of Darkness, a son of which qualified in the time of 26.41, will be sharing favouritism with Pure Doll, in what will be keenly contested affair.
