Veteran Trainer Scores Betfair Young Stars Classic Win

Veteran Glenorchy trainer Ted Devine took training honours at Thursday night's HGRC meeting conducted at Park in when his smart chaser Place Your Bet ( Cool – Billibev's Best) was successful in the Betfair Final ( 461 metres).

Sent out at odds of $4.30 from the yellow box, took up the running mid-race and then proved too strong for his rivals, eventually winning by two lengths in the time of 26.34.

Bred by Arthur Hurst and purchased at three-months, Place Your Bet has now won four of nine lifetime outings and stakes of in excess of $10,000.

“Ours is a family training concern, my wife June and son Jamie are involved and on the night we had a bit of luck,” the modest trainer explained on .

Ted Devine, a son of the former leading thoroughbred mentor Staffy Devine, is one of only a handful of trainers in Tasmania who has prepared a winner in all three racing codes.

“I probably experienced more success with thoroughbreds. Royal Chesapeke, Clockwatcher, Iriska and Belle Grando were all pretty handy gallopers,” he explained.

“I won three in a row with Royal Chesapeke, spelled him and then won another three on the trot. Clockwatcher won a Show Cup for me and Iriska was successful in the Thomas Lyons Handicap.”

Devine prepared several successful pacers including the Burnie winner Stylish Lindy, which he raced on lease from former Ulverstone publican Len Pearce.

Surprisingly the veteran trainer does not rate his win in the Betfair Young Star Classic Final victory as the best he has achieved with a greyhound.

“Little Finish was unlucky in the heats but then atoned by winning the Bob Brown Memorial Consolation,” he explained.

Place Your Bet will have his next run at the Raceway on Tuesday where he has drawn the coveted red box in the Simon's Design Centre Juvenile (452 metres) and is being quoted a $1.80 chance in early markets.

Meanwhile outstanding bitch Sultan's Swing ( – Prestige Girl) had her colours lowered by her kennel-mate Regent Typhoon ( Where's Pedro – Oxley Belle) in Thursday nights Betfair Invitation Stake (461 metres).

The bitch was shooting for victory number 36 in 65 lifetime outings, but surprisingly had to be content with dead-heating for third placing behind Regent Typhoon, which returned the good dividend of $13.40.

Leading trainer was also seen in the winners circle one race later when the highly promising chaser Sandbanker (Collision – Baretta Betty) was successful in the Grade 4 Boag's Draught Stake (461 metres).

Since entering Medhurst's Mangalore complex, the chaser has won three of four Tasmanian starts and is shaping up as a potential Invitation class performer.
