Trained by Robert Britton, the son of Magic Sprite and Kara Janx began fairly from box five, overcoming some slight trouble in the run to the first turn to sit in second position behind Dyna Villa running through the catching pen.
Once he balanced up down the back, the dashing black chaser set off in pursuit of last year’s Melbourne Cup winner who looked to have a winning break down the back.
As Dyna Villa swung for home, Above All hooked to the outside and unleashed a powerful finishing burst to assume the lead from Jenny Hunt’s kennel star just strides before the line. Boom youngster Dyna Double One ran a gallant race to finish third with Midnight Flynn just fourth.
Above All clocked 29.78 to win the $100,000 to the winner final and has now won 10 of his 16 starts with three minor placings. It was the second Group One victory of his career after he took out the Hobart Thousand in track record time last December.
Incidentally, both of his Group One triumphs have come from box five, highlighting the class of this magnificent chaser.
