Ando’s Mac wins 2016 Group 1 Melbourne Cup

ANDO’S Mac has emulated the feat of his sire El Grand Senor, taking out the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (515m) at Sandown Park on Friday night.

Stepping well from box five, the fawn dog (pictured winning his heat last week) had too much burn in the run to the line on the first occasion, crossing to the fence around the first turn and kicking clear.

Hot on his heels down the back was Jesaulenko (box eight), but despite the Terri Morris-trained dog’s best efforts, he couldn’t get to the leader in the run to the line, finishing three quarters of a length off Ando’s Mac in 29.48.

South Australian star Worm Burner (box two) produced a strong run from midfield to grab third, while favourite Zambora Brockie was never a winning chance after being shuffled back in the early stages.

Trained in the Hunter Valley by Jason Mackay, Ando’s Mac is the first NSW greyhound to win the Melbourne Cup since Go Wild Teddy scored back in 2000.

Owned by Luke Anderson and his partner Michaele Alderdice, Ando’s Mac has now won 16 of his 29 career starts, with his resume also boasting a dominant victory in the Group 1 Vic Peters Classic at Wentworth Park last month.

A June 2014 whelp, the son of El Grand Senor and Brook’s Doll has now won a whopping $556,386 in prize money earnings, a figure which places him in 15th spot on the all time prize money earner’s list.

Past Discussion

  1. what an interesting event.

so much steward detail in the reports as well, and that is a damn good thing for the industry. cannot complain now that they are ‘soft’ in their approach.

great race early, and as usual, that first corner sorts the men from the wimps.

the winner was brilliant and chased hard thru that bend and dashed away. usually a good sign for a winner if he opens up like he did and gets a margin like he did. get in the queue, they say.

heard some repurcussions about the 8 doing his contribution to being a naughty boy,and knowing the dog,one has to understand his history cant be defended. its unfortunate what he did,but also owning one who did same, I know defending all you like does not detract from the facts. I know this, and its unfortunate but that is what happens in this game.(I didn’t cop well either, but I knew) so bad luck to those connections. so close to.

a typical great nights entertainment put on by the SANDOWN club, and this is what we all dream of. if you make it,the atmosphere alone is worth making a final. the rest is just down to your dog.

well done to the MCKAYS and the owners,he is a great dog,and been flying since placed into JASONS hands.

well done SANDOWN. a mighty good image for the dog industry as usuaul. we have the best sport for excitement. bar none(v’landy’s u listening? BAIRD you to….lol)
