BONNIE Beauty (Cosmic Rumble x Come On Luann May ’15) continued her comeback from injury woes with a sensational win on debut over the ‘700’ at The Meadows on Saturday night.
Trained by Joe Borg, Bonnie Beauty lined up from box four in the handicap race, bouncing straight to the front and bolting clear to win by 7.64 lengths in 42.01.
It was her third straight win, having triumphed in fast time over the middle distance at The Meadows and Sandown Park in recent weeks, with Borg pleased with her form.
“We always knew she would stay, it was just a matter of getting her fit enough to race over the longer journey,” Borg told Australian Racing Greyhound.
“She has had a few injury problems which have kept her away from a lot of big races – she did her Achilles which took a while to get right.
“We were rapt with the win [on Saturday night]. A few of the form guides weren’t sure if she’d get the 700m, but we were confident and it was great to see her prove us right.”
Bonnie Beauty has now won 14 races from 25 starts, her prize money now in excess of $63,000.
Borg says he is likely to bypass chasing immediate group glory, with plans to stay home rather than heading to Sydney next week for the heats of the Group 1 Association Cup (720m).
“The Association Cup is a great race, but it has probably come up a couple of weeks too soon for her. She has never seen the track, she’d have to travel and I am wary that she might be a little bit flat backing up next week after her first 700.
“There is a nice race coming up at Bendigo and it seems like a good fit. It’s over 660m, she knows the track and I’d just like to keep her confidence up and get her ready for a lot of the big races coming up at Sandown Park such as the Speed Star and the Sandown Cup.”
If she can stay sound, Borg predicts Bonnie Beauty has a big future over the staying trip. She is bred to run, being out of prolific producer Come On Luann (Return The King x Star Diva Feb ’09).
“The mother has been an unbelievable producer. Bonnie Beauty’s litter sister Van Ann made the Sale Cup final and their half-sister is Come On Fantasy who was a very good stayer.
“The breed keeps on throwing on and now the next litter by Fernando Bale are starting out – Come On Emmaline won her heat of the Launching Pad at Sandown last week.
“Bonnie Beauty is very smart bitch. She is a better race dog than Come On Fantasy, although she has a while before she reaches her heights.
“Hopefully that can change. I think she has what it takes to step up to the next level and become a very good stayer.”
