Fine Only For Greyhound Trainer Of Positive Swab To Procaine

Greyhound have today finalised and inquiry in to a positive swab from a greyhound to Procaine, a local aneastethic frequently mixed with penicillin for veterinary use and a common source of accidental from greyhounds fed “4D” meat; the most common source of pet meat.

Notwithstanding that Procaine is a powerful local anaesthetic and similarly to Lignocaine has the ability to reduce or block pain in the area around the injection site.

GRV Stewards today finalised an inquiry into the circumstances pertaining to the post-race urine sample taken from the greyhound at the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association (“”) meeting held on 5th November 2008 indicating the presence of the drug Procaine.

Stewards heard evidence from licensed Tatura greyhound trainer, Mrs. , Dr. J. Vine (), Dr. Alistair Smith (Veterinary ) and another licensed person.

After hearing the evidence, Stewards charged Mrs. Wendy Connell with breach of GAR 83(2)(3) in that she did fail to produce the greyhound Pumpkin Eyes free of any drug for an Event at the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association (“The Meadows”) on 5 November 2008, given that a post-race urine sample be taken from the greyhound indicated the presence of the drug Procaine.

Mrs. Wendy Connell pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Stewards found Mrs. Wendy Connell guilty as charged and fined her the sum of $500.

GRV Stewards also disqualified Pumpkin Eyes”from Event 5 at The Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association meeting on the 5th November 2008.
