Fine Only For Healesville Greyhounds Positive Swab To Ketoprofen

Following advice from the Racing Analytical Services Laboratory, the of Greyhound conducted an investigation into the results of a post-race urine sample taken from the greyhound Blue Aura at the Greyhound Racing Club meeting on the 29 April 2012.

During the investigation, Stewards heard evidence from registered Trainer Mr. Glen Burton and received written statements from Dr. John Vine (Racing Analytical Services Laboratory) and Dr. Alastair Smith ( Veterinary Clinic).

After considering the evidence, Stewards charged Mr. Burton with breach of GAR83 (2) and (3) in that he did fail to present the greyhound Blue Aura free of any prohibited substance for an event at the Healesville Greyhound Racing Club meeting on the 29 April 2012, given the post-race urine sample taken from the greyhound indicated the presence of the prohibited substance .

Ketoprofen is a less commonly used that is used for short-term pain management as well as longer-term management of chronic pain particularly due to osteoarthritis.

Ketoprofen's analgesic properties work within an hour or two of and and it has a recommended witholding period of 48-72 hours prior to racing.

Ketoprofen's only performance enhancing properties are its ability to mask the pain of injury or arthritis.

Mr. Tony Vass represented Mr. Glen Burton at the hearing.

Mr. (GRV Chief ) represented the Stewards Panel.

Mr. Burton pleaded not guilty to the charge.

After hearing all the evidence tendered, the RADB found Mr. Burton guilty as charged and fined him the sum of $2000, with $1000 suspended for the next 12 months pending no further breaches of GAR 83, effective 12th September 2012.

Acting under GAR 83(4), the RADB also disqualified Blue Aura from Race 6 at the Healesville Greyhound Racing Club meeting held on Sunday the 29th April 2012.
