Greyhound Adoption Program Christmas Party On November 16th

Coffee vans and a barbeque to be run by Seymour Rotarians are also on the agenda, along with performances by Seymour East Primary School's choir and juggling .

Situated about 3 kilometres of the Seymour town centre at 298 Valley Highway, this event brings hundreds of animal lovers and their pet dogs (not just greyhounds) from Melbourne each year.

Having adopted out almost 3,000 greyhounds since 1996, the Greyhound Adoption Program is far and away the best of its kind across Australia and something the Seymour community can be very proud of.

About 350 retired greyhounds have been adopted into Victorian families each year for the past three years, and a recent $1.2 Million redevelopment of the property will allow this figure to grow to 500 per year by 2013.

Greyhounds are extremely placid and gentle animals and, contrary to popular belief, they sleep most of the day and a 20 minute walk is more than enough daily exercise for them.

They make ideal pets for people of all ages including young families, the elderly and households with other pet dogs.

The Greyhound Adoption Program is seeking expressions of interest from locals to become foster carers for the greyhounds, where food and assistance is provided during a 2-4 week period of preparing retired greyhounds for life as a pet by introducing them to new experiences such as general household noises, stairs, mirrors and slippery floors.

While the Greyhound Adoption Program has several foster carers based in and around Melbourne, finding foster carers in the Seymour region offers a lot of practicality.

Once greyhounds have been through foster care and graduate through the Greyhound Adoption Program, they are no longer required by law to wear a muzzle in public and are recognized by a special green collar.

To register your interest in becoming a foster carer or to find out more about visit gap.grv.org.au or call 5799 0166.
