Miata To Draw Big Crowd At Sandown Cup

A chance to witness arguably one of Australia's greatest greyhounds and win a $52,000 Mazda MX-5 is expected to a huge crowd to the greyhound track this Thursday evening.

The running of the nation's richest staying race for greyhounds, the , will see record-smashing Miata line up as the white-hot favourite. She will be aiming for her 16th win in a row.

“Miata is quickly becoming the Black Caviar of greyhound racing with her owner predicting she could reach speeds of up to 75 kilometres an hour,” Racing Minister Denis Napthine said.

“As part of this special night, everyone who attends will go into a draw to be allocated a Sandown Cup finalist. If Miata wins, the person who draws Miata automatically wins a brand new Mazda MX-5 Miata valued at $52,000.

“In the unlikely event Miata doesn't win, a Mazda 2 is up for grabs, so either way someone will drive away a winner on Thursday night.

“The Victorian Coalition Government has joined forces with the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club, Greyhound and Berwick Mazda in putting on this very special promotion that will attract many people to the track and let them witness the great sport that is greyhound racing,” Dr Napthine said.

Sandownd Greyhound Racing Club Chief Executive Officer said the Coalition Government's Raceday Attraction would prove a real boon to attract even more people to the Sandown Cup finals.

“Thursday's final is an unmissable chance to see Miata thrill the crowds and it only gets better with one lucky racegoer to drive away a brand new sporty Mazda,” said.

“In addition, families will receive a special treat with a winter wonderland, rides and showbags for the kids.

“The support from the Coalition Government is much appreciated and turns a fantastic night of greyhound finals into a night not to be missed,” Mr Miller said.
