The Andrea Dailly-trained Spud Regis has come up with the coveted red draw in Saturday night’s Group 1 Maurice Blackburn Lawyers Australian Cup at The Meadows, worth a whopping $250,000 to the winner.
Owned by the Treloar Syndicate, Spud Regis looked back to his best with a dazzling 29.76 victory in last night’s heats, recording super splits of 4.99 and 17.69, defeating Fiery by five and a half lengths.
Spud Regis will be looking to give Andrea Dailly her second Australian Cup success after victory with Dyna Lachlan in 2010. The black chaser is one of four greyhounds in the final sired by the great Bombastic Shiraz, a recent Hall of Fame entrant for what has been a stellar racing and stud career.
Great campaigner Glen Gallon has drawn box four in his quest for history after a last stride win over Ima Geisha Girl in 29.81. The son of U.S. sire Flying Stanley and Incoherent would push his winnings beyond $730,000 if victorious on Saturday, creating a new Australian prizemoney record.
Littermates Hello Good Bye and Cintiarna also look winning chances after brilliant heat victories. Hello Good Bye was the fastest of the eight heat winners, leading from the outset to score in a sizzling 29.74.
Sister Cintiarna continued on from her fabulous Temlee victory with a gutsy 29.99 win after a rough run to the first corner. The Bombastic Shiraz – Hello Sienna pair have drawn boxes two and six, respectively.
Trainer Jason Thompson will be looking to continue his amazing run after qualifying El Brooklyn (box three) in Saturday’s Group 1 classic. The daughter of El Galo pinged the lids in heat one, racing away to a 29.84 win, fresh off her Group 2 Healesville Cup success this month.
Next Saturday night will also see the running of the Group 1 Macro Meats Superstayers – worth $100,000 to the winner – and the Cosmic Chief Vic Breeders, worth $25,000 to winning connections. Entry is free and former Australian Idol star Jessica Mauboy will be part of a huge night of entertainment on the evening.
