Zambora Brockie clinches Warrnambool Cup with flawless run

THE Anthony Azzopardi-trained Zambora Brockie overcame a spirited challenge from Aston Bolero to clinch the 450-metre Warrnambool Cup on Wednesday night.

The winner paid $3.50 on the tote and with the $10,000 winnings took its career prize money to $137,000 with its 16th win from 27 starts.

Flying out of box six, Zambora Brockie jumped two lengths clear of the pack after the first 50 metres, but was quickly gobbled up by the Jason Thompson-trained Aston Bolero out of box seven.

Trailing on the final turn in what turned out to be a match-race between the two most heavily-backed chasers, Zambora Brockie found its second wind along the home stretch, snuffing out any hope of an upset with a strong finish to win by two lengths.

The Phillip-Smith-trained To the Galo’s (box 2) rounded out the top three and a 6-7-2 trifecta that paid $56.
