SPACE Star looks set to record his first Group 1 victory next Saturday night after his tremendous display in a heat of the Galaxy at Cannington at the weekend.
Jumping well from box one, the black son of Bekim Bale and Tonto Tears was never headed and, despite racing wide for most of the trip, scored by six-and-a-half lengths in a hot 41.57.
Now trained in Victoria by Robert Britton, the powerhouse chaser is yet to miss a place since joining his new kennel in November, winning six of eight including a tenacious triumph in the Group 2 Summer Distance Plate at Wentworth Park.
Local greyhound Expect A Guess (box two) ran second for Christine Robartson ahead of Brooke Ennis’s Blinker’s On (box four) and Takahasi (box seven).
Ennis will have two runners in the $80,000-to-the-winner feature, also putting the polish on Lady Toy, which was dominant in the second heat. A renowned slow beginner, Lady Toy settled midfield early from box six, railing through into third position past the post on the first occasion.
The unfashionably-bred daughter of Our Toyman and Railway Shiraz slowly started taking ground off the leaders My Mate Cobber (box one) and Starc (box two) down the back before dashing underneath the former in the shadows of the post, winning by half a length in 41.84.
My Mate Cobber and Starc held on to fill the placings with Ash Flash also making the final for Paul Stuart. Lady Toy has now won two from two since joining Ennis’s kennel with her other success coming in the listed Maidment Memorial at Sandown over 595 metres in January.
The box draw for the Group 1 Galaxy is as follows:
