Wagga Greyhound Club Committee To Benefit From Youthful Enthusiasm

In a step that is likely to both cause discussion and hope for the future amongst greyhound enthusiasts, the Greyhound Racing Club's newest committee member is one of the youngest people in racing to to be elected to the position.

18 year old Nicholas Hull, from the very well known Riverina greyhound family and a third generation greyhound participant has been elected to the popular greyhound club.

The move comes at a time when Wagga will be required to lift its profile and business plan to elevate the club to a major TAB player in .

Moreover, its also follow the success that the progressive Racing Club have enjoyed in the thoroughbred world from the election of younger committee persons to their board, that have allowed them to newer technologies and modern trends.

While young Nicholas may feel the weight of expectation as a trailblazer amongst his peers, the election of passionate greyhound participants to race club committees must be seen as advantageous to an industry that as a whole is dominated by more elder generations that might bring experience and business acumen; but lack familiarity with newer technologies, trends and demographics.

The Daily Advertiser's Les Muir takes up the story:

Wagga teenager Nicholas Hull has continued a family tradition by gaining a position on the committee of Wagga Greyhound Racing Club.

At 18 years old, Nicholas is the third generation of the Hull clan to raise a hand to help the growth of greyhound racing in Wagga.

The son of current WGRC club president , Nicholas is also the grandson of past president and long-time club supporter Graeme Hull.

An apprentice at Graeme Hull Smash Repairs in Wagga, Nicholas Hull yesterday revealed he was thrilled to be part of an exciting era for greyhound racing in the city.

“There's a lot happening (in the sport),” Hull said. “I'm just happy to be part of it.”

Clearly the youngest member of any race club committee in the Riverina, Hull said it was important new faces became involved to share the workload.

“I just wanted to have a go,” he said.

“I'd like to be there to help lead the charge.”

For Hull, joining WGRC committee comes after a long involvement with the sport.

“I grew up with the dogs,” he said.

“My dad and pop have always had dogs.

“I've always tried to help out.”

Although yet to train a greyhound for the track, Hull takes an active role in racing in Wagga. He is a regular at Wagga meetings and is a follower of the form

“I don't mind a punt,” he laughed.

Stepping for a sporting challenge, Hull will attend the WGRC annual meeting at the bar area at Wagga Showground tomorrow night.

One of several new committee members, Hull knows 2012 is likely to be a watershed year for the sport in Wagga.

WGRC is on the cusp of being granted an upgrade to tier two TAB racing, leading to a rise in prizemoney and more racing dates.
