Protester Group Continues The Lies At Logan

I’m all for animal welfare. The changes being implemented Australia wide are for the good of the dogs and the industry. However I’m sick and tired of the lies being produced by certain animal welfare groups that are produced as fact. They are far from the fact.

Just yesterday the group that calls themselves “Animal Liberation Queensland” conducted a protest at the site of the proposed Logan track. I’m sure this animal welfare group has the best interests of the breed at heart, but gee they talk complete and utter ill-informed crap. I’ll go as far as to say they tell some lies.

There was one particular placard being held by numerous of these protesters that took my interest.

It read “STOP. Our taxes paying for this”. The same sign had a picture of a greyhound falling in a race. It was a sad picture and not one industry participant likes seeing a dog fall, EVER.

Anyhow, I digress.

Back to the sign.

So let me get this right. Taxes pay for greyhound racing? Surely this sign was just a simple error, or worse, it was a sensationalist attempt at garnering support. The organiser didn’t believe it surely. This needed more investigation, so I went to the Animal Liberation Queensland website and went to the greyhound section. I didn’t bother investigating into the circus section, we already have our own circus to deal with it seems.

A quick read takes me to “The Main Issues” section of the page.

It seems that the first two listed issues are as follows.

– The continued use of taxpayer money to support greyhound racing in Queensland.
– The Queensland continues to provide with millions of tax payer dollars.

Then a bit further down we get the same issue re-hashed in another format.

– The Queensland greyhound racing industry is losing money every year and we do not believe the use of tax payer monies as a top-up to a declining industry is justifiable.

Hmmm, so it seems the placard wasn’t a simple error or attempt at garnering support. This group actually believes the rubbish they are spouting. They actually list three issues in different wording that are in fact the exact same thing. They don’t want taxpayer dollars paying for greyhound racing.

Deary me, let me put your collective hearts at ease, and more specifically the event organizer, Hayley Cotton, who no doubt had a role to play in the creation of these signs.

Put simply, it’s not the case and you are telling lies. It’s a complete fabrication in your collective imaginations and far from the fact. But I guess that wouldn’t have helped the petition signing yesterday as you misled a public that believes you. They believe these lies and that is the problem.

Would you like the facts? Or are you content with fiction. I’ll provide the facts in regards to Queensland.

FACT ONE Tatts contributed $108.7 million to the racing industries this year in Queensland.

FACT TWO – $40.9 million was paid in taxes from Tatts alone.

FACT THREE – Further money is contributed to the industry and in taxes to Queensland via corporate bookmakers.

FACT FOUR – More money is paid in taxes by the greyhound industry than your tax dollars pay to “top up” the industry. Please see the table below. The greyhound industry received $480,536 from the government last final year. A pin prick compared to the tens of millions generated.

FACT FIVE – Hundreds of job would be created at Logan, which would create more tax via income tax for Queensland.

FACT SIX – There is hundreds of people currently employed within the greyhound industry paying taxes. Bar staff, TAB staff, the guy with the souvlaki truck at the track, veterinarians, stewards, track staff, maintenance men, cleaners etc. The list is endless and they all pay tax.

FACT SEVEN – Animal Liberation Queensland needs to actually investigate what they are saying and tell the truth.

Projects Funds Received From Government For The Life Of The Project To (30/6/14) Funds Return To Government
Cronulla Park, Logan $480,536 0
Rockhampton Greyhound $115,309 $115,309
Logan Greyhound $1,487,417 $1,487,417
TOTAL $2,083,262 $1,602,726
TOTAL RECEIVED FROM GOVERNMENT $480,536

Facts and figures taken from Tatts Annual Reports and Racing Queensland Annual Reports.

Over to you Hayley and Animal Liberation Queensland. Time to stop the lies.

Damien I am disappointed that you have resorted to logic and fact. Its really unfair on Hayley who is best placed in the fiction section of the library…

@woosha The problem is that not only does the industry not get propped up, we are the ones doing the propping. These groups have a fantasy in their heads and run with it. Let’s see if they have the honesty to change the lies on their website… Somehow I doubt they will.

Damien Oborne Hmmm, they would never do that, that would be admitting they were wrong, I have spoken to Hayley Cotton in the past and she has a one track (excuse the pun) mind.

greyracer I have no doubt she has a one track mind. Also have no doubt that nothing will be done. The same misleading signs were at the protests in NSW and will be at the next rally that Animal Liberation Queensland conducts. Maybe some of the general public might see the lies through some actual facts.

i’m confused.. like all evolutionary creatures, havent these animals evolved into what they are for a reason. does their genetic desire to chase perceived prey at high speed not come from what would have been their need to eat to survive in a place where the food was a small fast fluffy thing?… surely providing a large, smooth, flat surface with a controlled lure is far better for these dogs than the rough natural terrain and zig zagging rabbit?… i say the track is a safe place for them, safer than the park, or the beach to run at. so… Read more »

So let me get this right… 12 million of tax payers dollars is not being used for the construction of the Logan racetrack?

Pauliepaul Hi Pauliepaul .. The figures listed are to the end of the financial year and accurate .. As for 12 million for the Logan track, it’s a  percentage of the taxes generated by the industry .. The industry is not being “propped up” by taxes as Animal Liberation Queensland indicates. That’s a fabrication .. Maybe we stop all the taxes being paid by anything to do with the greyhound industry .. See how that would work out for everyone? Greyhound racing in Qld generates FAR MORE than 12ml in taxes, and it’s not close.

I can understand that its not a “prop up” but we must acknowledge that it still is a contribution to the industry. $480000 for the financial year may be a drop in the ocean of total funds generated from the industry but it is still quite a considerable amount of money and for a majority of people present on Saturday would liked to have seen it go to other uses. I think the main underlying issue with Animal Liberation Queensland regarding the greyhound racing industry is that it is indeed self regulated with the welfare of racing greyhounds not being… Read more »

Pauliepaul I can answer from personal experience on breeding practices. I have got a very well bred broodbitch and I cant breed her a 3rd time until her pups have shown ability at the racetrack .. As for animal welfare, GRV should be applauded for the meticulous way they are inspecting properties around the state .. I moved property recently and the day after receiving my address the GRV were in attendance to perform an inspection of the premises .. Kudos .. As for a lot of the other questions in regards to GA, we agree that GA has poor… Read more »
