Rowella’s Terry & Betty Penny On A Roll
Rowella trainer Terry Penny admits to having spent many years trying to win races with greyhounds of limited ability, however his luck has taken a turn for the better and at Tuesday afternoons NWGRC meeting conducted at the Devonport Raceway, he did almost the impossible by winning races with three members of the same litter.
When Clyde's Angel, Penny's Angel and Miss Roman Nose, all members of the Collide – Ricky's Angel litter, greeted the judge in their respective races, it had students of the game scratching their heads trying to fathom when was the last time that it had occurred.
This particular litter of six has taken the sport by storm in recent months in Tasmania, all members having now won races, with the tally of 27 victories likely to increase very quickly in coming months.
Penny and his wife Betty relocated to Tasmania from New South Wales eight years ago, where they dabbled in the sport in the Cessnock area.
“We decided on a lifestyle change and selected the Tamar Valley as the ideal spot to live and establish a training complex,” Terry explained.
“We have enjoyed limited success to date with the likes of Minted, which won us six races, but in recent weeks our luck has really changed for the better.”
It all started when the Penny's borrowed the Elite State bitch Ricky's Angel from non-other than Tasmania's favourite son Ricky Ponting, with the intention of breeding a litter of pups.
“The stipulation was that Ricky obtain two pups from the litter and that I retain the remainder and that is exactly how it panned out, with Betty selecting Collide as the stud dog most likely to throw us some winners,” Terry explained.
Ponting's two pups race as Strapper's Angel and Strapper's Boy and have won a total of ten races from the Launceston kennels of Dale Hammersley.
Clyde's Angel, Miss Roman Nose and Penny's Angel have won eight races for Terry and Betty Penny and the remaining member of the litter Rewind, has won on nine occasions from the kennel of veteran Bracknell trainer Morrie Strickland.
“Rewind was barking at night and upsetting the other pups and Morrie was interested in buying him, so I agreed to sell,” Terry explained.
“Good luck to him he is a great trainer and to date Rewind has set the standard as far as the litter is concerned, winning nine of his twelve starts in very impressive fashion.”
The Penny's will return to their happy hunting ground the Devonport Raceway on Tuesday afternoon when their chasers will contest heats of the Reg and Aileen Ivory Memorial Classic.
Meanwhile another well related young chaser in Bosco, opened his winning account at the Tote Racing Centre on Monday night from the kennel of Penguin trainer Butch Deverell.
Raced by Ulverstone owners Brian and Justin Crawford, Bosco is by Collide from the Elle's Dominator bitch Edan Rose and therefore a full brother in blood to the standouts Big Moose and Akka Boy.
“Big Moose and Akka Boy were members of Edan Rose's first litter by Collide and they were so successful that the Crawford's decided to breed to him again,” Deverell explained.
“Bosco looks like he will well and truly make the grade and will now contest the Launceston Veterinary Hospital Tasmanian Breeders Classic Series at the Tote Racing Centre.”
Unfortunately for connections another member of the latest litter in Edan's Prince, broke down badly at last week's NWGRC meeting and will be absent from the track for several months.
“He was leading the field and pulled a triangle muscle rather badly, but that is racing and we all know that one has to take the good with the bad,” Deverell declared.
