Greyhound Prize Money Records

Greyhound racing
Fernando Bale (pink rug) is the top prize money earner.

The names Wheeler and Dailly dominate the all-time earners list in greyhound racing, with the famous surnames combining to own and train the only two dogs to have topped the $1 million mark.

Paul Wheeler combined with co-trainers Andrea and Tom Dailly to spearhead the glittering career of Fernando Bale, which ended with 35 wins from just 44 starts.

Dyna Double One, owned by Wheeler’s son, Brendan, holds second position on the all-time money earners list with after a career spanning 54 starts for 31 wins, nine seconds and six thirds. It was also trained by Team Dailly.

Will anyone ever catch Fernando Bale?

The Australian prizemoney records have seen rapid changes in recent years with major group 1 events now worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, including the Melbourne Cup which is the world’s richest greyhound event at $420,000-to-the-winner.

With the constant flux we offer a simple list of the Australian record prizemoney earning greyhounds that we will constantly update as it changes.

High Earner was the highest career prizemoney earner with $610,070 earned from 69 starts that reaped 33 wins and 21 places including 2 Group 1 Perth Cups, the 2011 Group 1 Temlee, the 2009 Queensland Derby, 2009 WA Derby, 2009 Vince Curry Memorial; a second in the 2009 Australian; and making finals of the 2009 Topgun, 2010 Adelaide Cup, 2010 Temlee, 2010 Australian Cup and 2011 Golden Easter Egg.

It took a Group 1 Temlee win for High Earner in February 2011 for him to break Rapid Journey’s long standing prizemoney record of $530,995, which had stood since 1998.

In February 2013, Miata won her 5th Group 1 and 40th career win in the Group 1 Galaxy at Cannington at her 46th start and took her prize money to a new Australian record of $671,508. The fawn flash retired later that year with $715,508 to her name.

The mighty Miata didn’t hold onto the record for long, in 2014 the incredibly versatile Xylia Allen assumed the top spot on the list for owner Jan Wheeler and trainer Jenny Hunt. The champion bitch retired late in 2014 with an incredible 40 wins and $743,730 in prize money earnings.

2015 saw yet another change to the rankings, with champion stayer Sweet It Is taking up the top spot to become the first greyhound to break $800,000 in prize money after winning her second Group 1 Sandown Cup.

Sweet It Is relinquished her spot at the top of the list when history was made on October 9, 2015, when the mighty Fernando Bale became the first greyhound to win $1 million in prize money.

His win in the 2015 Adelaide Cup took his career earnings to an incredible $1,006,110, with victories in the Group 1 National Derby, the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg, the Group 1 Harrison Dawson, the Group 1 Peter Mosman Classic, the Group 1 Maturity Classic, the Group 1 National Sprint Championship, the Group 2 Bendigo Cup, the Group 2 Traralgon Cup and the Group 3 Bill Collins Memorial all contributing to the mighty feat.

There are currently two greyhounds to have broken the $1 million prizemoney barrier, Fernando Bale and Dyna Double One. Sweet It Is was also a member of the seven-figure club, however she was disqualified from winning both the Group 1 Duke of Edinburgh Silver Collar and the Group 1 National Distance Championship due to positive swabs, resulting in her total dropping back to $944,954.

  3. Good prize monies these days when you compare the prize monies 14 years back. Rapid Journey’s achievements are outstanding with his record prize money of $530,995 way back in 1998 when prize moniey back then where no where near what it is today.
