Good Odds Cobber leads strong field for Gosford Gold Cup Final

Good Odds Cobber wins Gosford Gold Cup Heat 3

The 2025 Beast Unleashed Gosford Gold Cup heats showcased thrilling contests at Gosford Greyhound Track, where elite greyhounds battled for their place in one of New South Wales’ premier Group 2 events. With $40,000 to the winner and a chance at historic glory, the January 3 final promises to deliver an electrifying start to the greyhound racing calendar.

Gosford Gold Cup Heat 1 – Speddy Pie’s late burst (29.29)

Jason Magri’s Speedy Pie announced herself as a top contender with a well-timed and intelligent run in the opening heat. Breaking cleanly from Box 2, she settled in behind Fusion Mint, who exploded from Box 8 to lead with a scorching first split of 4.37 seconds.

The two greyhounds pulled away from the rest of the field, establishing a gap of over ten lengths down the back straight. Despite Fusion Mint’s blistering early pace, Speedy Pie stayed within striking distance, stalking the leader through the middle section of the race. Swinging for home, she found another gear, surging past Fusion Mint in the final strides to win by half a length paying $5 with Neds.

Behind them, Black Tsunami recovered from early interference to finish third, but she was never in contention to challenge the leaders. Speedy Pie’s victory, her first at Gosford, highlighted her adaptability and finishing strength, marking her as one to watch in the final.

Gosford Gold Cup Heat 2 – Chief Lighting sets the standard (29.12)

The fastest heat of the night belonged to Chief Lightning, another star from the Jason Magri kennel. Jumping sharply from Box 7, Chief Lightning carved across the field to lead early with a blistering 4.34-second first split. By the back straight, he had opened a commanding five-length lead.

Chasing valiantly was the $1.40 Picklbet favourite, Gets Late Early, who broke well from Box 8 and quickly settled into second. While Gets Late Early mounted a late charge, Chief Lightning showed remarkable stamina and determination, holding on to win by one length. Make Them Cry, who had been caught in traffic early, rallied to finish third, a further 3.5 lengths back.

Chief Lightning’s performance underlined his exceptional speed and consistency, with his record now standing at 14 wins from 25 starts. His ability to lead from the front and withstand late challenges makes him a strong contender in the final.

Gosford Gold Cup Heat 3 – Good Odds Cobber keeps the dream alive (29.34)

Defending champion Good Odds Cobber produced a gutsy performance to secure his place in the final, despite not having things all his own way. Breaking evenly from Box 2, Good Odds Cobber had to work hard to navigate traffic as Miss Zig Zag sped to an early lead with a sharp 4.37-second first split.

Miss Zig Zag led down the back straight, with Poco Rico pressing on the inside. Good Odds Cobber positioned himself perfectly behind the leaders, and as the field swung into the home straight, he capitalised on an inside run to power past Miss Zig Zag and claim victory by three-quarters of a length.

Miss Zig Zag showed courage in defeat, holding on for second, while Poco Rico finished third after battling gamely throughout. Good Odds Cobber’s win wasn’t flashy, but it was a testament to his experience and determination, reinforced by his favourable draw in Box 1 for the final.

Gosford Gold Cup Heat 4 – Blue Goose Boy shocks the field (29.36)

The final heat delivered the upset of the night, as Victorian raider Blue Goose Boy stormed to a four-length victory at $23 odds with the top greyhound bookmakers. Breaking evenly from Box 6, Blue Goose Boy settled midfield as early leaders Both Bowers Ace and History’s Coming jostled for the lead.

As the leaders tired approaching the home turn, Blue Goose Boy showed exceptional track sense, easing off their heels and making his move down the outside. With a powerful finishing burst, he surged clear in the final stages to win comfortably. Both Bowers Ace stayed on gamely to finish second, with Agent Aspen closing strongly for third.

Blue Goose Boy’s win, while unexpected, was no fluke. Trained by Graeme Jose, he displayed both tactical awareness and stamina, qualities that make him a genuine contender for next week’s decider.
