Jack Corben Returns To Wenty

Jack Corben who trained greyhounds for 58 years and who was a long serving member of the 's Bankstown Branch passed away on July 13. Jack was born on July 19, 1924 and his funeral was held on his birthday July 19, 2010.

Jack's granddaughter Lisa Wakeham organised a special night for Jack's family and close friends last Saturday night to commemorate Jack's life in greyhound racing and to spread his ashes on the rose garden adjacent to the winning post.

Jack's son Fred together with Lisa and their families, Jack's great mate and long time helper and his wife and other family friends attended for a night out including a race sponsorship – race 4 “The Jack Corben Stake” won in fine style by Destiny's Imp owned and trained by Susan Sundstrom from Bargo.

Wayne Ryan has fond memories of his times with Jack.

Wayne said Jack's best was probably Sang Pur; he had a dog named Nebroc (Corben backwards); it wasn't great but won a couple; Jack loved the sport so much.

Jack was a gardener and Lisa said it was appropriate for his ashes to be sprinkled on the Glebe headquarter's rose garden – something Lisa said Jack would have wanted.

The family hopes to make this an annual occasion at Wentworth Park, to celebrate Jack's life with a race in his honour.
