Ted’s Fears Unfounded

Any fears that trainer Ted Devine may have had about Place Your Bet (Big Daddy Cool – Billibev’s Best ) losing weight on the three hour trip from to the Devonport Raceway on Tuesday afternoon were allayed when the chaser blew his rivals away in the Simon’s Design Centre Juvenile (452 metres).

“Place Your Bet was down in weight marginally and I thought that it might affect his performance but thankfully it was not to be,” he revealed after the race.

Beginning brilliantly from the red box, the chaser spread-eagled his opposition, eventually winning by eight lengths in the time of 25.90.

The winner of the Betfair Final at his previous outing, Place Your Bet has now won five of 10 lifetime and stakes of in excess of $11,000 and is shaping up as a potential Invitation class chaser.

Punters were on the ball at the NWGRC meeting, with nine favourites and one heavily supported second favourite winning on the ten event card.

Burnie trainer Sandra Elphinstone set the ball rolling when Posh Will ( Collide – Oh Zoya) was successful in The Advocate Grade 5 (580 metres) event.

Several months ago the young trainer predicted that the chaser was a top stayer in the making and her judgement is proving to be spot on, Posh Will having won two of his last three starts in impressive fashion.

Trainers and Leigh Wood took training honours at the meeting by both returning home with two winners to their credit.

The Moorleah based Watts was successful with Sour Pop ( Where’s Pedro – Sum Chance) and Wata Smartie ( Premier Fantasy – A Pose), whereas Whitemore’s Wood won with Bo Fantasy (Premier Fantasy – Bo Douglas) and Riley Diary (Bombastic Shiraz – Smart And Sassy).

Raced by prominent Victorian trainer , Sour Pop has won four of his last five starts for Watts and is a chaser of considerable potential and Whata Smartie has recorded four wins in succession for the trainer, who is battle with several other mentors for Tasmanian training honours.

Meanwhile at the Tote Racing Centre on Monday night, speedy bitch How Many Times ( – Crystal Siyan) continued on her winning way in the Country Club Casino Invitation (278 metres).

The Eileen Thomas prepared bitch was challenged early by the Ged Mace prepared Puddle Fish ( – Cool Hayley), but with the advantage of an inside draw was able to retain the running and ultimately the race, in the time of 16.17.

A short-course specialist, the Paul Farrugia owned bitch has now won five races in succession and is the 278 metre track record holder at the Tote Racing Centre with a time of 15.96.

Veteran New Norfolk trainer provided one of the upsets of the LGRC meeting when Macey’s Favourite ( – Miss Moneybox) saluted in the Kingsley Jarman Fencing Grade 5 (600 metres) at the lucrative odds of $25.80.

It was the third win for the bitch, which is raced by Robyn Johnson, the wife of leading trainer Gary Johnson, in partnership with Kindred farmer Murray Mace.

Brazendale is not afraid to accept other trainer’s rejects into his kennels and invariably bobs up with a well priced winner at all Tasmanian venues.
