2024 Topgun & Topgun Stayers acceptances revealed
The prestigious 2024 Group 1 Topgun and Group 1 Topgun Stayers races are gearing up for another year of fierce competition, with the final list of acceptors now confirmed.
Scheduled for November 9, 2024, at The Meadows, this event will feature the nation’s most talented greyhounds, with the Group 1 Topgun racing over 525 metres, while the Group 1 Topgun Stayers will be run over 730 metres.
The invitees for both races were released earlier this week by the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association (MGRA), with 36 sprinters invited to nominate for the Topgun over 525 metres, while they invited 20 stayers for the Topgun Stayers.
From that initial list, 24 sprinters have accepted for the Group 1 Topgun, while 16 stayers have accepted for the Group 1 Topgun Stayers.
2024 Group 1 Topgun Acceptances
This year’s sprinters’ division boasts a powerful lineup that includes Alpha Zulu, Big Energy, and Lakeview Emily, all ready to deliver blistering performances.
Other top competitors like Mepunga Smokey, Miss Envy, and Zipping Megatron will push the field to its limits, vying for a chance to win the coveted $150,000 prize.
2024 Group 1 Topgun Stayers Acceptances
In the stayers’ division, veterans like Aunt Virginia, Canya All Class, and Black Silencer lead the pack. With the extended distance of 730m, endurance will be key as these greyhounds compete for the top prize of $75,000. Emerging challengers such as Drill Sergeant and Ethanol Volume will be eager to make their mark in this gruelling race, ensuring a closely contested finish.
Greyhounds That Did Not Accept After Invitation
For the 2024 Topgun (525m) and Topgun Stayers (730m) races, a total of 12 greyhounds for the Topgun and 4 greyhounds for the Topgun Stayers declined their invitations.
The Topgun night at The Meadows remains a hallmark of Australian greyhound racing, with its $150,000 prize for the Topgun Sprinters and $75,000 for the Stayers attracting top-tier talent from across the country.
The selection panel will now need to deliberate to select the elite eight dog fields for both races.
