Dapto’s Group 2 Country Motor Company Puppy Classic semi-finals were conducted tonight, with a number of fast greyhounds qualifying through to the final, where they will be racing for $75,000.
In the first semi-final, Little Elsie (Box 1) went to the boxes as the $1.50 favourite and was never headed to win through to next week’s rich final in 30.03. The Amy Bennett trained greyhound by El Grand Senor ex. Oxley Amy notched up her seventh career win in the process. She clocked a fast 5.39 to the first mark and the blue fawn bitch’s early speed will be a real asset in next week’s final. Obee One (Box 3), by Where’s Pedro ex. Ima Osti for Leslie Thompson, was the second qualifier through. He showed enough early speed to tack onto the back of Little Elsie and avoid the trouble at the first turn. Ello Reg (Box 5) ran home for third.
Lani Banarni (Box 1) proved that the inside box was a winner in the second semi-final, running a fast 29.98. The Charlie Gatt trained black bitch by Disintegrate ex. Hey Princess was given plenty of room when So Swanky (Box 2) crashed to the right at box rise. My Bella Rose (Box 5), for Alan Manwaring, stepped nicely from the boxes but copped a slight bump from So Swanky running down the straight the first time, but she was able to pick herself up to finish second, 2 3/4 lengths behind Lani Banarni. Encosta Deplente (Box 7) finished third and just had to do too much work to try and cross from an outside box.
In the third semi-final Exhibitionist (Box 8) showed what she could truly do this week, absolutely pinging from the outside box and flying around the Dapto circuit in 29.71. The red fawn bitch, by Superman ex. Naughty Nicki, was a $1700 purchase at the auction and is trained in Queensland by Tony Brett. Her first section of 5.31 was exceptional and she gave nothing else a chance, scoring by 12 1/2 lengths. Rounding the turn home, Spring Creek Kev (Box 2) barged past Sizzling Sally (Box 9) and Jawlaa (Box 4) to secure his place in the final.
The last semi-final was taken out by the Sharon Webster prepared Lachlan Bomber (Box 4). He stepped well from the boxes and travelled two off the fence the whole trip. Genetic Jenny (Box 6) and Tommy Wong Turn (Box 5) did their best to stay in the hunt for the final, but Gold Hunter (Box 1) for James Mcfarlane stormed home in similar fashion to last week’s run, finishing within a length of Lachlan Bomber. The race time was 30.18 and the slowest of the four semi-finals. Genetic Jenny (6) was able to finish third.
The clear fastest qualifier through to next week’s final was Exhibitionist. She was flawless from start to finish and will be one of the favourites for next week’s final. The other finalists are Lani Banarni, Little Elsie, My Bella Rose, Lachlan Bomber, Gold Hunter, Obee One and Spring Creek Kev, with Encosta Deplente and Genetic Jenny the reserves.
