Superstar chaser Black Magic Opal was installed as the immediate heavy favourite when the box draw for the $350,000 to the winner Melbourne Cup was conducted and the dog known as ‘Max’ certainly didn’t disappoint tonight as he blitzed his rivals in a simply devastating performance, taking out the Group One Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park.
Pinging the lids once again, this truly gifted son of Magic Sprite and Awesome Opal, led all the way in a sizzling time of 29.36 and gave master trainer Jason Thompson his second consecutive Melbourne Cup and third of his career.
Bred by Les and Carol Hudson on the Central Coast of New South Wales, Black Magic Opal caught the eye of trainer Jason Thompson during his successful campaign in the 2013 Group Two Maitland Cup and an opportunity arose for Thompson to purchase this flying machine.
Once shifting to Thompson’s Pearcedale Kennels, the black flash has dominated the one and two turn circuits, including breaking two track records at Warrnambool (24.87 over 450m), which was his first ever look at the track and Geelong (25.10 over 460m).
Recording his 26th win tonight from just 33 career starts with a prizemoney total now exceeding $495,000, a future stud career is already secured for this true champion of Australian racing.
