Canya Amy leads betting for Summer Distance Plate after box draw

The stage is set for the 23rd edition of the Group 2 Summer Distance Plate final at Wentworth Park, promising a thrilling showdown between some of the country’s premier stayers on Saturday, January 18. As part of the Group 1 National Derby and Futurity card, the 720m feature race boasts a $40,000 winner’s cheque and a rich history of producing standout performances from both local and interstate stars for just over 10 years.
Fastest heat winner Canya Amy (Box 3) leads the betting at $2.50 with the top greyhound bookmakers following her dominant 41.54-second effort last week. She will face stiff competition from the consistent Late Night News (Box 5), who overcame early troubles to secure his place in the final.
Jodie Lord’s Law Book (Box 4) enters as a rising star, having comfortably handled her first attempt at the distance in 41.80 seconds in heat 1. Adding further intrigue is the well-credentialed King Tide (Box 8), drawn ideally to challenge late. With a mix of proven stayers and emerging talents, the 2025 Summer Distance Plate is shaping up as a race to remember.
Summer Distance Plate Heat 1 – Law Book (41.80)
Law Book announced herself as a staying contender with a commanding performance in the first heat of the Group 2 Summer Distance Plate at Wentworth Park. Stepping up to the 720m trip for the first time, the Jodie Lord-trained chaser broke smartly from box two before asserting her dominance. By the back straight, she had taken control of the race, opening up a five-length lead over early leader Canya Vivi, who ultimately finished second. $1.45 BlondeBet favourite Late Night News encountered early trouble but recovered to claim third, 5.75 lengths behind the winner.
Clocking an impressive time of 41.80 seconds, Law Book handled the extended trip with ease, showcasing both speed and stamina. The performance marked her fourth career win and signalling her readiness for higher honours. With trainer Jodie Lord’s calculated step up in distance paying off, Law Book now heads into the final as a genuine contender, poised to challenge the best stayers in the field.

Summer Distance Plate Heat 2 – Canya Amy (41.54)
Canya Amy was welcomed back to winning form with a commanding performance in the second heat of the Group 2 Summer Distance Plate at Wentworth Park. Breaking sharply from box one, the Matthew Lanigan-trained runner took control early, fending off an initial challenge from King Tide. Canya Amy maintained her rhythm throughout the race, gradually gaining ground to cross the finish line six lengths ahead of her closest rival in an impressive 41.54 seconds, setting the fastest heat of the night. This marks yet another standout performance at Wentworth Park for the red fawn chaser, who continues to excel at the 720m journey.
King Tide settled into second early and, while unable to match the leader’s finishing burst, secured the runner-up position with ease. I’m Sally rounded out the placings after finishing strongly, albeit 15 lengths adrift of the $1.75 betting site winner. With this performance, Canya Amy heads into the final as the favourite to beat.
