Group 1 Perth Cup winner Deadly Avenger has secured a slot in the $600,000 Sandgroper (520m) at Cannington on April 24, representing Ladbrokes as they aim for back-to-back victories in the prestigious slot race.

The George and Joe Borg-trained chaser stormed to victory in last Saturday’s Group 1 Perth Cup, delivering a powerful performance under the care of Steve Withers.

His dominant win from Box 1 was enough to secure a spot in The Sandgroper, where he will compete against an elite field.

Deadly Avenger, a son of Tommy Shelby and Avenger Lass, boasts a career record of 12 wins from 29 starts and has amassed over $260,000 in prize money.

His ability to perform at the highest level, with four Group 1 final appearances, makes him a strong contender for the feature race.

Ladbrokes, last year’s winning slot holder with Hector Fawley, will be hoping for another triumphant campaign.

Their decision to snap up Deadly Avenger comes as he bypasses the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg to prepare for his Sandgroper tilt.

Currently priced at $10 in early markets, he joins a growing lineup that includes Miss Envy (Sportsbet), Tim Zoo (TABtouch), and Canya All Class (Mintbet).

Questions still surround Explicit and John Thompson’s potential slot in The Sandgroper, but betting markets have already marked him as the favourite.

Explicit is the shortest odds at ($4.60), with Miss Envy ($5) and Tim Zoo ($6) close behind with top greyhound bookmakers.

With standout contenders such as Lakeview Emily set to draw major attention this Saturday in the Shepparton Cup Final, excitement is already mounting ahead of the highly anticipated April 24 showdown.

As the greyhound feature of the Western Trilogy Series, The Sandgroper remains a magnet for elite talent, and Deadly Avenger is now officially ready to stake his claim.
