Queensland Racing Integrity Commission to undergo independent review

The Queensland Racing Commission () which oversees the state's greyhound racing, harness racing, and industries, is set to undergo a review starting in January 2023, according to an announcement by Racing Minister .

The purpose of this review, anticipated to be completed by the quarter of 2024, is to ensure that QRIC continues to uphold standards of integrity and within the industry.

During the review process various aspects of QRIC's operations will be examined, including its powers and responsibilities, managerial practices, training programs, communication strategies, and initiatives aimed at improving service delivery.

The goal is to identify areas for improvement and propose actions that will enhance QRIC standards and promote governance models, decision-making processes, cultural change measures, and support services.

This independent review aligns with the recommendations made in the MacSporran Report and reflects the 's commitment to maintaining a body for racing.

The report highlighted issues with industry self-regulation and identified conflicts between 's interests and its dedication to animal welfare and integrity.

Consequently, the government decided to establish two bodies—one focused on commercial racing aspects and another dedicated solely to upholding integrity standards and ensuring animal welfare.

Minister Grace emphasised that the Queensland Government remains fully dedicated to supporting a sustainable racing industry that operates with care for animal welfare while adhering to high standards of integrity.

“QRIC has been in operation for seven years and has successfully implemented groundbreaking animal welfare reforms while also providing oversight of the racing industry,” Grace said.

Minister Grace highlighted the growth of the Queensland racing industry since QRIC's establishment.

This includes increased turnover and prizemoney, enhanced racing infrastructure, and unwavering commitment to animal welfare and integrity standards.

Grace emphasised the importance of the review to ensure that QRIC continues to excel as a regulator in an ever changing industry.
