Australian greyhound racing to phase out Surgical Artificial Insemination
Greyhounds Australasia (GA), in accordance with Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) recommendations, will discontinue the permitted use of surgical Artificial Insemination (SAI) in greyhound breeding starting January 1, 2026
The shift aligns with the AVA’s recommendation for using techniques like Transcervical Insemination (TCI).
Veterinary authorities have recognised that SAI is no longer aligned with animal welfare standards in practice.
The greyhound industry sector will be granted a transition period until January 1, 2026, so that veterinarians can undergo the required training and gain expertise in TCI.
During this time, GA has pledged to work together with experts in reproduction to provide guidance and details for greyhound breeders and owners.
The set guidelines for Frozen Semen (FS) will stay the same, requiring at least 100 million active sperm per breeding unit.
