GRSA announces major prizemoney boost for Virginia’s SA coursing

Greyhound Racing SA (), with the South Australian Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association (SA ) has just announced a boost in prize money for SA events.

The increase means that prize money for eight dog coursing events will now be on par with time graded track events and there will be raises for the Oaks, Derby and Waterloo Cup.

The total prize money for the SA Waterloo Cup will double from $4,000 to $8,000, while the coursing and prizes will jump from $2,650 to $5,000.

The move demonstrates an investment in coursing and highlights GRSA's renewed dedication to supporting participants and providing opportunities for greyhounds across all levels.

“We are excited to reveal this increase in prizemoney for coursing as it shows our commitment to offering opportunities for all participants,” stated , CEO of GRSA.

“Coursing at and the Waterloo Cup holds value in our sport and the additional prize money ensures its continued importance on our racing calendar.

“Alongside the boost in prizemoney there will be changes to the entry conditions, for both the (SA) Oaks and (SA) Derby.”

The whelping deadline for eligibility for both the coursing Oaks and Derby will move to “on or after June 1, 2022” to align with the eligibility criteria for the circle SA Oaks and SA Derby races conducted on the track at .

In addition, greyhounds looking to compete in the coursing Oaks, Derby and Waterloo Cup must have attended at least one coursing event in 2024.

The prize money has been increased with effect starting from the coursing event, on Sunday, July 14, 2024.

Following that initial SA coursing meeting, there will be coursing events on Sunday, August 11, and Sunday September 8, before the Oaks, Derby and Waterloo Cup races take place later in September.

Revised SA Coursing Prizemoney

  • For 4 dog coursing events: place $350 place $110 (previously first place $265 second place $90)
  • For 8 dog coursing events: First place $525; place $160 ( first place $380; second place $120)
  • Waterloo Cup: First place $6,000; second place $1.600; third place $200
  • Oaks: First place $3.700; second place $1.000; third place $150
  • Derby: The first place prize is $3,700, with the runner up receiving $1,000 and third place getting $150

A $500 will be awarded if the winner of the Derby, Oaks or Waterloo Cup has participated in two Virginia Coursing meetings during the 2024 season.

This increase, in prize money is anticipated to draw higher quality of greyhounds to SA coursing events enhancing the sports visibility and thrill.
