Mackay Greyhound Club To Be Homeless By 2010

Mackay GreyhoundsComing hot on the heels of the greyhound track ; a news report from the Mackay Daily Mercury this morning has cast doubt over the future of greyhound racing in Northern Queensland.

Mackay Greyhounds have been long time residents of the Mackay Showgrounds on Nebo Road in the Northern Queenland town.

However, The Daily Mercury reports that “a cane farm at Te Kowai has been identified as the preferred site for the new showgrounds with the venue set to double as the next home of in Mackay.”

It is understood that the current plan is to leave the Nebo Road site operational until 2010 and at that time move to the new showground site. The current showground site will then be developed by the Urban Land Development Authority (ULDA), a body charged with developing affordable housing projects.

The Daily Mercury reports that The Mackay Turf Club has been earmarked as prospective tennants for the new showgrounds site and plans have already been discussed to build “an all-weather synthetic track, similar to the one used at Caloundra's Corbould Park”.

The move would allow the current turf club site on the Peak Downs Highway to be sold and redeveloped for residential and light commercial purposes.

The Daily Mercury reports that “there are no plans for greyhound racing to be conducted at the new showground site”.

Queenland Greyhound Racing can hardly afford to lose another track, with the Gold Coast track set to close at the end of July, leaving all TAB racing to be conducted at only two tracks.
