Owen Langley Disqualified For 12 Months Over Sildenafil Positive
Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) Stewards conducted an inquiry into the analysts reports of the finding of Sildenafil in the urine sample taken from Magic Opinion after that greyhound performed poorly in finishing sixth (last) in Race 8 The Greyhound Recorder Richmond To Wenty Heat 2, 5th Grade 717 metres run at the Richmond meeting on Saturday 4 May 2013.
Evidence was taken from trainer Owen Langley, the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory's (ARFL) Dr John Keledjian and Racing NSW Head Veterinarian Dr Craig Suann. Written evidence was submitted from the ARFL, Racing Analytical Services Victoria and GRNSW Integrity Officer Brad Frost.
Mr Langley made admissions that he had administered a Maxman tablet on the day of the race, which he believed would assist the greyhound with cramping. This was purchased on the belief that it was an all natural herbal product, which was supported by the product disclosure statement. Subsequent testing by the ARFL of a Maxman tablet obtained from Mr Langley's kennels disclosed the presence of Sildenafil.
It was noted by Stewards that Sildenafil is the active ingredient of the pharmaceutical product Viagra and would not be considered to negatively impact on the performance of a greyhound. Stewards were also mindful of the veterinary report pertaining to the greyhound, noting the significant injuries that were sustained in the race.
Mr Langley pleaded guilty to a charge under GAR 83 (2) (a) in that he presented Magic Opinion for the race in question other than free of a prohibited substance. Mr Langley was disqualified for a period of 12 months.
In determining penalty Stewards took into account Mr Langley's recent record whereby this was the third occasion he had been found guilty under the same prohibited substance rule in the past four and half years, his culpability in administering an imported non-pharmaceutical or non-veterinary product, as well as the excessive level of the prohibited substance. Stewards also factored in Mr Langley's guilty plea, his co-operation with the inquiry and his personal circumstances.
Under GAR83 (4) Magic Opinion was disqualified from the race in question and the placings amended accordingly.
Mr Langley has indicated he will appeal the ruling.
