S.A Derby Brings Yeehah For Yowyeh.
It was all celebrations for the connections of consistent sprinter, Yowyeh, who took out the Group 3 Coca-Cola S.A Derby on Thursday night at Angle Park.
With every heat winner breaking 30-seconds, it was always going to be an even affair; but the son of Premier Fantasy and Que Sera Sera went into the nights' main event as one of the fancied chances, along with fellow Victorians, Black Hombre, Shivine and Allen Lawson.
Out of the boxes it was Yowyeh that showed the most dash with an impressive 4.44 first section. Black Hombre began hitting top speed down the back and actually took the front, while Explosive Drop had settled close on the heels of the leading duo.
It was a true race-in-three off the back, with Black Hombre looking the goods. But Yowyeh demonstrated plenty of strength when it mattered, and raced away from the pack to record a great victory, collecting the trophy and $25,000. The winning time of 29.79 is a fair indication of the quality of the winner, and the entire field, on a night where good times were hard to come by.
It was the second valuable final victory in three starts for the winner, as the Cranbourne Puppy Classic was only claimed last month by Yowyeh, before making the worthwhile trip to the City of Churches
Yowyeh, named after a Brisbane Broncos player, is owned by the Champagne Syndicate and trained by the in-form Angela Langton. On a big night for the family, Angela's husband, Jeff Britton, and father in law, Alan Britton, were responsible for training the trifecta, while Angela also scored a winner at Sandown Park with Karanji getting up at big odds.
It would seem likely that the Britton brigade will be back for next month's Group 1 Triple M Adelaide Cup; a series which technically began last night with the first S.A-Only Prelude taking place.
Point Two Over again showed class when it counted by winning the event, with littermates Where's Cisco and Where's Pancho running excellent races up front. All three greyhounds have now earned automatic entry into the Adelaide Cup heats to be staged on October 7.
The long list of automatic starters for the Cup will also include all eight finalists from the Paws of Thunder at Wentworth Park (to be decided Saturday night) and the winner of the upcoming Strathalbyn Cup.
Aston Thomas and Sargent Trigga will also be there on heats night, as they gain entry by being representatives in the Sister Cities Cup series which concluded in Christchurch on Thursday Night.
In a boilover result, reigning National Sprint Champion, Metz Magic, was defeated by NZ greyhound, and local representative, Another Dollar, with Aston Thomas third. Another Dollar is by Collision out of Another Gale and has now won his last five races. His career tally now stands at 17 wins from 28 starts for winnings over NZ$50,000.
