Spud Regis’ Adelaide Cup Glory After Brush With Death

It's going to take more than a car accident to hold down. The resilient greyhound shook off his brush with death to score an emotional victory in the Adelaide Cup at on Thursday night.

Less than a week after being involved in a serious crash that claimed the life of his litter-mate Big Black Mac, Spud Regis collected the biggest pay cheque of his career and stamped himself as a genuine star of the sport.

Shooting for his eighth straight win, the son of Bombastic Shiraz showed his class flying out of box five to be second to the first turn.

He quickly overhauled local hope Prank Call down the back straight, shooting clear as they turned for home.

Spud Regis ($4.40) kept his composure in the run to the line, stopping the clock in 29.75 seconds and holding off fast finishing Qua Vadis ($9) by a length-and-a-quarter. Proven Nitro ($4), the fastest qualifier, was two and three-quarter lengths back in third.

The $3 favourite Heston Bale found trouble early but battled home well for fourth, while prank Call ($61) came fifth and was the best of the local hopes.

“He's awesome – it's a miracle he's even here,” trainer said through tears. “It's was terrible what happened but he's amazing.”

Spud Regis, named after AFL personality Danny Frawley, needed special care all week after being shaken up in the crash that happened as the team returned home to their Anakie base after the heats last week. He has enjoyed a terrific run in Adelaide, winning his past five starts including the Group 3 SA Derby last month.

Spud Regis has now won 10 of his 13 career starts, earning almost $130,000 in prizemoney.

After the placed runners the field finished in the following order 4th Heston Bale ($3), 5th Prank Call ($61), 6th Wattle Bee ($21) 7th Coal King ($5.50) and Andrew's Courage ($51).

Spud Regis is a Black dog whelped December 2010 by Bombastic Shiraz from Phiona (Hot Chill x Iona Phantom). He is raced by the Treloar Syndicate and is trained at Anakie by the Dailly Team.

He has now won 10 races and been placed on one occasions from his 13 starts. Adding the first of $75,000 for the Adelaide Cup his stake earnings went to $127,785.
