Sunset Serengeti shines in 2024 Mandurah Oaks triumph
Sunset Serengeti took out the 2024 Listed Mandurah Oaks on Friday night, May 3, giving Dave Hobby his fourth win in the classic race as a trainer.
Hobby had previously won the Mandurah Oaks with Groovy Model in 2001, Disturbia in 2009, and Sharon Monelli in 2013.
Bred and owned by Clinton Hobby, Sunset Serengeti was sent to the boxes for 2024 Mandurah Oaks final as the +170 race favourite with greyhound bookmakers despite qualifying as the slowest of the three Mandurah Oaks heat winners.
Punters had put their faith in Sunset Serengeti to win the Listed final after a herculean effort to win her heat, coming from a distant second last mid-race to hit the lead in the shadows of the post.
Having drawn box two in the $20,000 to-the-winner final, punters were on much better terms with themselves than the week prior, when Sunset Serengeti found the lead after just 10 metres, and bolted away to secure the Mandurah Oaks title in 26.98.
The daughter of Hard Style Rico and Sunset Kodiak went within three lengths of the Mandurah 498 metre track record, beating kennelmate Sunset Hornet by 2.5 lengths, with Lip Tricks a further four lengths away in third.

Sunset Serengeti took her record to nine wins and 11 placings from 26 starts, earning the Hobby family $72,651 in prizemoney.
The 26kg red brindle bitch excels at Mandurah, where she has had six starts for five wins, with all those wins coming over the 498 metre journey.
Her only failure at Mandurah was over the 400m trip, finishing fifth.
Sunset Serengeti secured her first black-type win in the Oaks after finishing unplaced in the 2024 Group 3 Perth Cup Consolation final in March, her only other attempt at black-type company.
