Topgun winner Excavation replaces Mackenna in The Phoenix lineup

Mackenna, the 2024 Golden Easter Egg winner, has been withdrawn from The Phoenix, the world’s richest greyhound race, scheduled for December 21 at The Meadows.
The standout daughter of Whiskey Riot and Alcyone sustained a back muscle injury during a recent trial, forcing her out of the $1.65 million event.
Trainer Paul Abela confirmed the injury, expressing that while the decision to withdraw Mackenna is disappointing, her recovery is the current priority.
Acquired by George Alvaro last year, Mackenna has had a stellar racing career, amassing 15 wins from 23 starts and $497,000 in earnings under the guidance of her former trainers, Michelle Sultana and Darryl Thomas.
With Mackenna sidelined, Aaron Bain Racing and Summit Bloodstock have enlisted Topgun champion Excavation to take her place in The Phoenix, which is currently the $5.00 second favourite behind kennelmate Explicit ($3.20) with the top Australian bookmakers.
Excavation, trained by Jason Thompson, clinched his Topgun victory with an impressive time of 29.52, setting a new race record on Saturday, November 9 at The Meadows.

Excavation now joins kennelmate Explicit, who will represent Awesome Lodge in the elite event, with Thompson’s stable poised to make a strong showing at The Phoenix.
