What’s In Store aiming to feature in Group 2 Laurels semi-final

CRAIG Treherne is hoping his improving race bitch What’s In Store can continue her handy run of form in Sunday’s 2 Laurels Classic (515m) semi-finals at Park.

The black bitch has drawn box one in the second of four semi-finals, the same box which she exited last week when recording a gallant second to Kiranna in her heat.

Although she was beaten 5.66 lengths on the line, the winner clocked an airborne 29.20, with What’s In Store weaving her way through the field to clock 29.59.

Treherne said he wasn’t surprised to see the 27.5-kilogram chaser produce a good run, despite being sent to the boxes as a $19 shot.

“I was chuffed with the run,” Treherne told Australian Racing Greyhound.

“It wasn’t totally unexpected because she finally got a good box after a string of non-preferable draws so I thought she may improve.

“She is a great little chaser.”

What’s In Store will face a handy field this Sunday including ‘s Striker Light (box two) and the speedy Fair Of Face (box three).

However, Treherne says his bitch is capable of making an impact.

“She wants the inside, but she can’t lead this race so I am just hoping she can position up behind them because she is pretty strong,” he said.

“If she can find a good spot behind them anything is possible – particularly in this series because a lot of the dogs are young and inexperienced.

“Working to her advantage is that she has had 20 starts now – so some of these dogs are still doing things she was doing six or eight runs ago.

“If the (less experienced dogs) get it a little bit wrong it can affect them – whereas last week she ran into the back of a dog and didn’t give up.”

Owned by Luke Miller, What’s In Store is a daughter of Spring Gun and former top stayer Lady Arko.

Treherne said her breeding indicates she will continue to improve as she matures.

“She was a very bullish bitch early on – she still is a bit – so she is still learning how to be a race dog.

“I have had some of this breed in the past and they can take a while to put it all together – they seem to naturally improve with age and experience.”

A winner of three of her 20 starts, Treherne said it would be a massive achievement if What’s In Store can qualify for next week’s $50,000 to the winner final.

“It would be a great thrill to make a group final with a bitch we thought three or four months ago would be a graded country dog.

“Had you have told me I’d have a 500m plus dog three months ago I would have disagreed – so she has certainly improved.”

Four semi-finals of the Laurels Classic will be run at Sandown Park on Sunday afternoon, with the top two from each race qualifying for the final on December 15.
