The Meadows greyhound tips & quaddie picks | Saturday, April 23
Greyhound racing at The Meadows takes place again on Saturday night, and Team Dailly has a key hand in the race of the night – thephoenix.melbourne – with four runners engaged in the 3rd/4th Grade event over 525m. The quaddie legs look to be a real challenge and we have had to go really wide in our selections. Race one starts at 6:35pm AEST.
BEST BET: ASTON OSCAR
This dog has improved in his last two starts having won at Ballarat over the 390m in a best of night 22.16, before a good second here last week where he finished second, running 30.67. The draw (1) will help, and although he isn’t blessed with a ton of early dash, he is quick enough out to position third or fourth in the run and the 525m doesn’t worry him as he finished off quite well here last time. In February he got the money at Ballarat from this box and his run was again the best of the night. Liam Sharp has him going well and we feel the dog is a big chance to notch up his first city win. Of the dangers, Sazan Bale and Monique Keeping will be hard to beat.
NEXT BEST: OSPREY ROSE
This Angel Langton-trained greyhound looks hard to beat despite drawing poorly. She has come back to some good form the last two starts having won at Sandown Park over the 515m in 29.56, before a solid third here last week (30.77) after getting backed in late. She can be hit or miss at box rise, but with the dog on her outside in box six normally missing the kick by a length early, we think she may get a little room to move early. A career strike rate of one win in every four starts also suggests when she is on the bunny, she has a big chance of winning.
VALUE BET: AMBROSE BALE
Despite having 26 starts for just the one victory, we think this greyhound may be worth an each-way play at the price. The white and brindle chaser hasn’t had much luck with box draws of late and drawing the red here should suit. He isn’t the strongest of greyhounds, so we are counting on him to win the start again, like he did last week, and then try to put two or three lengths on them early. The last 100m is the worry, but we should be getting good place odds, so an each-way bet is the play.
