GWIC redoes Million Dollar Chase box draw ensuring fairness

Million Dollar Chase set to do redraw box draw

The Greyhound Welfare and Integrity Commission (GWIC) has stated that they will be reviewing the box draw processes within the New South Wales racing sector due to a lack of integrity in the draw for the 2024 Million Dollar Chase event on Friday at Wentworth Park.

After some doubts were raised regarding the fairness of the draw held at Wentworth Park Saturday evening, trainers picked boxes with numbers from one to eight randomly and selected barriers numbered as one through three and eight in sequence in the first four choices.

A formal investigation was initiated due to concerns about the selection process’s randomness.

The GWIC carefully examined all the videos and collected reports from people who were there and those who watched the live broadcast.

“While there is no evidence that anything untoward took place at the initial box draw, we determined that the processes used were insufficient to ensure the integrity of the draw,” Mr Birch the Chief Operating Officer of the Commission said.

“Specifically, we found that the procedures undertaken prior to the draw were not rigorous enough and that some box numbers were visible to some trainers and patrons.”

“The Commission will be exploring new and more robust processes for conducting public box draws to ensure greater confidence.

“I stress again that there was no intent to make these numbers visible, we determined that the process was inadequate and are of the opinion a redraw was warranted.”

The redo took place at Wentworth Park using the classic ‘banjo’ technique overseen by Birch and recorded by Greyhound Racing NSW to ensure transparency and rebuild confidence in the procedure.
