Million Dollar Chase history

In 2018, Greyhound Racing NSW unveiled the Million Dollar Chase, cementing it as the richest greyhound racing event on the global stage. The series culminates in a Grand Final at Sydney’s Wentworth Park every October, with the winner walking away with a staggering $1 million prize.

But the Million Dollar Chase is more than just a single race. It’s a journey that winds through Regional NSW, where greyhounds compete to secure spots in the semi-finals held at Wentworth Park. From there, only eight dogs earn the right to contest the Grand Final, where one is crowned a millionaire.

The event also champions the welfare of retired racers, with all entry fees donated to the GRNSW charity, Greyhounds as Pets, which supports the re-homing of dogs after their careers on the track.

Mystic Riot made history by winning the inaugural race in 2018, trained by Jodie Lagogiane of Llandilo in Western Sydney. Her husband Peter, acting as handler, provided one of the event’s most emotional moments, dancing jubilantly up the home straight as their dog crossed the finish line.

A year later, it was Frank and Tracey Hurst’s turn to celebrate when their greyhound, Good Odds Harada, claimed the coveted Million Dollar Chase title.

In 2020, Peter Lagogiane proved that lightning can strike twice. His dog Handsome Prince surged from the wide Box 7—just like Mystic Riot two years earlier—and stormed to victory in 29.72 seconds, leaving Xerri and West Australian Tommy Shelby in second and third place.

While Lagogiane missed out on having a finalist in 2022, Frank Hurst returned with Good Odds Cash to chase another Million Dollar Chase crown. But all eyes were on the brilliant She’s A Pearl. After winning 11 straight races, including the Golden Easter Egg, she delivered a flawless performance in the Grand Final. For trainers Jodie and Andy Lord, She’s A Pearl made it 12 wins in a row, dominating the field to win by 5 1/2 lengths in 29.32 seconds.

Just four months later, Wentworth Park hosted another Million Dollar Chase, this time with an open field. John and Minnie Finn had three finalists, including standout sprinter Zipping Kyrgios, while Peter Lagogiane was hunting a third title with French Martini. The lone interstate challenger, Victorian-trained McInerney, stunned the crowd, becoming the first non-NSW greyhound to claim the world’s richest race.

In 2023, Queensland superstar Jay Is Jay delivered a fairytale victory for the Zammit kennel. After a fourth-place finish in the Grafton regional final, the Zammits nearly withdrew from the competition. But a strong showing in the City Qualifiers saw Jay Is Jay hit form, winning in 29.73 seconds. He then blitzed the semi-finals in 29.45 seconds. Despite starting slowly from Box 2 as the second favourite, Jay Is Jay took advantage of first corner interference to rail through the field. He overpowered Cumbria Kid and Victorian star Postman Pat to secure the sixth edition of the Ladbrokes Million Dollar Chase.
