Jasper Kempshall: A young greyhound racing enthusiast
Jasper Kempshall, a 14-year-old resident of Sandy Crossing, stands out from his peers in more ways than one.
While most teenagers his age are fixated on video games and phones, Jasper has his eyes set on a different goal, the world of greyhound racing.
As his parents near retirement, Jasper is gearing up to step into the family business.
“I’m almost 14; my mom and dad are ready to retire soon, so I’d like to take over the business in a couple of years’ time, and it’ll be good; I’ll have a lot of fun with that,” he shared eagerly.
In preparation for his responsibilities, Jasper is diligently working towards securing his attendant license, which will grant him the opportunity to box and catch dogs during race day.
Recently evaluated by Dean Degan, the acting chief steward of the Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission, Jasper received commendation for his proficiency and self-assurance.
“We’re looking at how well he handles the Greyhound, how confident and how comfortable he is when he is with the Greyhound,” explains Degan, optimistic about Jasper’s readiness.
Beyond racing, Jasper’s love for greyhounds extends to their training and well-being.
He devotes hours to ensuring that the dogs are well prepared and cared for before each race.
“There’s just something about training them, seeing them run, and figuring out what they’re good at,” he remarked.
The local racing community has played a role in supporting Jasper along this journey.
The track staff has witnessed his growth firsthand and is wholeheartedly backing his ambitions.
“Everyone at the track has been great. They really help me out and support what I’m trying to do.”
Jasper is eagerly looking forward to his birthday and the fresh experiences it will bring.
He suggests that others explore the world of greyhound racing.
“It’s just so much fun. The dogs are great, and there’s so much excitement in the sport. It’s the best kind of fun you can have,” Jasper shared.
