National Distance Champs Field Red Hot

Miagi secured one of the last two qualifying spots to Saturday night’s Rapidvite National Distance Championship at Wentworth Park, with a very handy 42.51 win in the Rapidvite National Distance Championship NSW Final.

The current Wentworth Park Track Rcord holder has been missing in action while Chinatown Lad and Fallen Zorro have taken all before them in recent months, reportedly due to injury.

The extended break from racing has robbed Australian Greyhound Racing fans of the chance to see three of the best stayers in modern times go head to head.

At just his third start from a five month spell, Miagi began moderately but negotiated his way to the lead at the winning post the first time and made it a one act affair from there, beating Risk It by 4.25 lengths, with Lyn’s Daisy a further .75 lengths back in third.

In taking second place, Risk It managed to secure the sole remaining qualifying spot to the Rapidvite National Distance Championship Final.

Several of already qualified Rapidvite National Distance Championship Finalists used the “week off” to visit Wentworth Park get some track experience, trialling solo under normal race conditions, although South Australia’s representative elected to race under full race conditions and was easily beaten by Money Magnet in a mixed 4/5th grade race running 43.48, finishing fifth, some twelve lengths from the winner.

Tayza (WA) trialled over the full 720 metre journey registering a handy 42.76 and Nicely Done (Qld) managed a 42.99 run the had trainer Bob Giltinan feeling the need to explain “she rarely trials solo”.

Rebel Angel (Vic) took the opportunity to use the run as a “freshen up” while still gaining track experience by flying over the 520 metres in a very fast 30.01.

Fallen Zorro (Tas) ran an impressive 42.67 at her first look at the Wentworth Park track and with the run only just outside Miagi’s winning time and obvious improvement from the experince, the last start Track Record breaker will no doubt vy for favouritism with Miagi for the Rapidvite National Distance Championship Final.

The box draw for Rapidvite National Distance Championship Final was peformed trackside at Wenworth Park last Saturday night and has set given Fallen Zorro the unenviable task of having to lead Miagi all the way from her box 6 draw, with Miagi drawing well out in the eight box.
