Queensland and Western Australian Derby winner High Earner will go into next week’s $38,000 Imagetec Gold Coast Cup as favourite after blitzing his field in the Heats last Thursday night.
The Christine Robartson-trained dog is leading the market for the Group Two race at 3-1 after the box draw put him out wide in box eight.
Last Thursday night’s heats saw a barrage of top talent hit the track along with High Earner, including former Victorian performer, Velocette.
Drawing a favourable box two in the final, Velocette was the third fastest heat of the night in the windy conditions, running in 30.18 with onlookers giving it the title of the run of the night.
Fastest qualifier of the night was emerging greyhound Dashing Corsair who was a finalist in the Queensland Derby and WA Derby and has consistently improved with each start, last night’s blistering time of 30.07. Dashing Corsair drew box five in the final.
The win takes his record to four wins and four placings from eight starts at the Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club, beating race favourite Turanza Bale.
Cosmic Rumble beat High Earner in similar fashion at Brisbane in the Flying Amy Classic last May, and with his first sectional last night of 5.72, drawing box five should not be a problem for the start.
Each second place of the four heats also qualified, with Trew Millions who ran behind High Earner drawing box four, Paddy Bell who finished second to Dashing Corsair in box three, Turanza Bale in box seven, and Ryan’s A Rocket in box six.
Ryan’s A Rocket was impressive in his performance behind Velocette recording the fastest second place of the night.
The Final next Thursday night is sure to draw a crowd of punters to the track with the quality field.
Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club general manager Luke Gatehouse said the Club was very fortunate to have the quality dogs making the finals.
“During the entire Winter Carnival we have had some of the best fields I have ever seen, and this means that we are getting quality finals,” said Mr Gatehouse.
“It goes without saying in any sport, the big names pull the big crowds, and that is what has been happening.
“The punters are out in force too, which is one of the best indicators of how good the racing is.”
The Garrards Winter Carnival Cup is the closing night of the Sky Channel Winter Carnival, and will be celebrated with trackside party including live music, kids entertainment and competitions on Thursday night, July 23.
