Battle Royal At Devonport Greyhounds

Smart chasers Decembrist ( – World's Finest) and Sour Pop (Where's Pedro – Sum Chance) staged a battle royal over the concluding stages of the Distance Championship (580 metres) conducted at the Raceway on Tuesday afternoon.

The Peter Phillips owned and prepared Decembrist prevailed in a spine tingling finish in the time of 33.27, however the Russell Watts prepared Sour Pop was gallant in defeat and lost few admirers.

Third placing was filled by the prepared Pippi's Gold ( Cool – Capable Assassin).

Decembrist, a full relation to the now retired , has now won 25 of 80 lifetime outings while accumulating a $102,270 purse for his Copping based owner.

Regarded as one of Tasmania's finest middle distance performer, his lifetime earnings now exceed that of Damek, who raced on 61 occasions for 45 victories and stakes of $101,485.

While Damek failed to adjust to strange surroundings while campaigning interstate, Decembrist did Tasmania proud by winning several races including the New South Wales Derby and the Newcastle Mayor's Cup.

“It was certainly a thrilling race and any one of the first three dogs could have won, so it's very rewarding to win under those circumstances,” Peter Phillips explained after Tuesday's Distance Championship.

“I was a bit worried when Decembrist didn't lead early in the event, but things eventually went to plan.”

The owner-trainer then hinted that he may retire from the sport when Decembrist's racing days are over.

“He's probably got about another six months left in his career and then it maybe a life on the couch – for both of us,” he declared.

Meanwhile two chasers from the same litter of pups have debuted in brilliant fashion in Tasmania in recent weeks.

Bearville Phil and Bearville Boy, by Give Me Five from the Big Daddy Cool bitch Von's Angel, were both placed when racing for the first time at the Devonport Raceway on February 7, but have since both won in emphatic fashion.

Bearville Phil, an occupant of Gary Johnson's Ulverstone kennel, won at Park in over 461 metres in the respectable time of 26.36 and then the dose over 452 metres at the Devonport Raceway five days later in a very smart 25.75, the fastest on the programme.

Bearville Boy, prepared at Bishopsbourne by David Crosswell, has raced on only one occasions since for an impressive victory over 452 metres at the Devonport Raceway in the time of 25.98.

Both Chasers were bred and are raced by Railton's Gerard “Bear”Allford, a former top country footballer and a greyhound trainer in his own right.
