Gosford Gold Cup runner-by-runner greyhound preview & tips | 3/1

This Friday night at Gosford we will see the first group race of the year, the Group 2 Gosford Gold Cup decided.
Unfortunately, last year’s winner and pre-post favourite Good Odds Cobber was withdrawn by GWIC stewards earlier in the week, leaving Make Them Cry to take the coveted inside box for the final.
Here is a complete runner-by-runner preview of the Group 2 Final:

Can Make Them Cry win the Gosford Gold Cup?

9 Make Them Cry
|
Gets the dream box thanks to the stewards scratching Good Odds Cobber, who had a laceration that stewards believed would hamper him. However, he was well beaten by Chief Lightning in the heats and would need to begin much better and hold the fence early behind the hot early pace to be any hope in this field.
Can Miss Zig Zag win the Gosford Gold Cup?

2 Miss Zig Zag
T: Sydney SwainF: 81512Career: 48: 12-8-7Prizemoney: $82,030
|
Miss Zig Zag was gallant in defeat in her heat, leading everywhere but the last 50m as Good Odds Cobber ran her down. There is no Good Odds Cobber here, and she draws the best of the three speed machines, drawn in boxes two, three and four respectively. She is a big chance in this race if she can hold the three and four out to the first turn as they will run cover for her.
Can Chief Lighting win the Gosford Gold Cup?

3 Chief Lighting
T: Jason MagriF: 11231Career: 25: 14-3-8Prizemoney: $52,995
|
Chief Lightning did what he does best in the heats, that is begin like a rocket and give nothing else a chance. 515m sees him out though and he doesn’t want it any longer, but he was the fastest first section of any dog and it was his first look here so he could improve. If he crosses to the fence early in the lead, he will again be very hard to run down at 3.50 odds with PlayUp.
Can Fusion Mint win the Gosford Gold Cup?
![]() |
4 Fusion Mint
|
Fusion Mint has been in blistering form, winning the Group 2 Maitland Gold Cup before carving across the face of the field here in her heats, creating havoc behind her. Unfortunately for her, only one dog missed the trouble, and that was the very strong Speedy Pie, who mowed her down in the last couple of strides. She was the second-fastest dog early and will need to use that pace again here. If she can manage to find here way across the inside few and get some cover, she may well make it back to back Group 2 victories.
Can Blue Goose Boy win the Gosford Gold Cup?
![]() |
5 Blue Goose Boy
T: Graeme JoseF: 77281Career: 37: 15-4-7Prizemoney: $75,300
|
Blue Goose Boy looked as though he was going to be unlucky in the heats being forced wide from box eight and losing ground, but the box was a blessing in disguise, as when the leaders jammed up turning for home, he swooped around them to a strong victory. He is horribly drawn with all the speed immediately under him but if he misses them and gets some luck, he is definitely the strongest runner in the race with beautiful odds of $21 with the top greyhound bookmakers but will need luck.
Can Speedy Pie win the Gosford Gold Cup?
![]() |
6 Speedy Pie
T: Jason MagriF: 11511Career: 29: 15-5-3Prizemoney: $49,150
|
Speedy Pie was the beneficiary of a dream split when most of the field was taken out at the first turn in his heat, and it turned the race into a match race with Fusion Mint. Speedy Pie got him with a couple of strides left but is horrible drawn in box six and is not likely to get that sort of luck two races in a row.
Can Both Bowers Ace win the Gosford Gold Cup?
![]() |
7 Both Bowers Ace
T: Melinda FinnF: 43322Career: 73: 19-25-14Prizemoney: $152,890
|
Both Bowers Ace never really got a fair crack at his heat. He began well enough but got squeezed up between runners at the first turn and when he went for a winning run at the home turn, he got checked again doing well to just balance up again and qualify for the final. This is no easier and he is likely to have problems with the kennel mate in the early stages.
Can Gets Late Early win the Gosford Gold Cup?
![]() |
8 Gets Late Early
T: Melinda FinnF: 41122Career: 70: 25-15-8Prizemoney: $237,725
|
Gets Late Early just keeps finding ways to win and will be right in this race. He has had box eight in the final of the Group 1 Paul Wheeler and again in his heat here and handles the wide draws well. He got the perfect trail across to sit behind Chief Lightning and just couldn’t run him down, so will have his work cut out for him here, but Minnie Finn just manages to find a way to get them up for these big races. Will need luck but if he begin well, is not hopeless.
Gosford Gold Cup 2025 selections & best bets
The 2025 Gosford Gold Cup promises an electrifying start to the New South Wales Group racing calendar, with the $40,000-to-the-winner prize set to ignite Friday night’s action. With a blistering 29.12 heat win—the fastest of all qualifiers—Chief Lightning, the $3.50 second favourite at Picklebet, appears to be the one to beat. His explosive early speed from Box 3 is his weapon, and if he leads into the first turn, he’ll take catching. At $5.50, Fusion Mint, who has been in sparkling form, looms as the main challenger. Despite being narrowly beaten in her heat, her tactical pace from Box 4 gives her a strong chance to contest for the lead.
Blue Goose Boy offers excellent value with Neds at $21, especially for exotics. His strength and ability to finish races powerfully could see him capitalise on any mid-race trouble. Drawn awkwardly in Box 5, he’ll need some luck early but is capable of a podium finish if the race opens up. Rounding out the top-four selections is Make Them Cry in Box 1, who inherits the inside draw after the withdrawal of Good Odds Cobber. With the right run along the rails, he can feature prominently in the finish at $5.50.
