Group 1 Perth Cup odds, tips and betting preview

THE biggest race on the WA greyhound racing calendar will be run this Saturday night, with the Perth Cup to take centre stage at the brand new Cannington track.

Despite the track only being open weeks prior to the series, 24 interstate raiders made the journey west last week to tackle the heats of the Perth Cup and the Galaxy, however the locals stole the show, with six WA-trained greyhounds qualifying for both features.

Blazin' Bomber, one of only two Victorian greyhounds to make the Cup final, was the fastest qualifier from last week's heats, clocking a blistering 29.85 over the 520m trip. The Darren Pattinson-trained chaser has won all three starts since resuming from a spell and should be ready to produce his best in the $140,000 to the winner feature from box three.

The Victorian powerhouse should get a beautiful run into the race on the outside of Ramifications which is currently the $2.40 favourite with Sportsbet. Trained by leading WA conditioner Chris Halse, the son of Barcia Bale and Disco Girl is generally a reliable beginner and if he can find the lead he will prove hard to reel in with a 29.88 personal best to his name.

Also set to be in a battle for the lead in the early stages is rails runner Ima Wagtail. The black dog is trained by local mentor John Iwanyk, who has run second in the Cup on two previous occasions, and is expected to feature prominently from the cherry. A winner of seven of his 35 starts, the son of and Aella clocked a slick 29.97 in his qualifier last weekend but should improve on that effort after missing a run the previous week due to an abandoned meeting.

Shared Equity is the class runner of the race, but is drawn awkwardly in box six. The black bitch is by Brett Lee out of the top producer West On Bluebird, a sister to former WA champion Miata, and comes into the race as the winner of 25 races and $238,558 in earnings. This will be the 11th group race final for last year's Group 2 winner and she will be aiming to break through for a deserved first victory at the highest level.

Paul Stuart, who won the Cup in 2013 with Dyna Nalin, has Tiggerlong Await drawn in box five for the decider, however he will have to be at his absolute best to overcome the squeeze box in this high quality affair.

Also given rough chances are Lorus Time (box four) and Katsuro Sahara (box seven) which are $17 and $16 respectively. Both were good winners of their heats but have not fared well with the box draw, making their task just that little bit more difficult.

Miracle rounds out the field off box eight, with bookies confident he will need one to win, sending him out as the race roughie at a massive $101.

The Group 1 Perth Cup is race eight at Cannington and is set to jump at 11:27pm AEST.
