Maitland Thursday preview & betting tips | November 28, 2024

The beautiful Maitland track plays host to 12 top-class greyhound races this Thursday, with the first set to begin at 2:22pm local time. There will be five heats of the Group 2 Maitland Gold Cup, with some of NSW’s best greyhounds heading to the Hunter Valley to compete for the $40,000 first prize. Australian Racing Greyhound will give all the runners the once-over and try to find you a couple of winners.
Race 9: Chief Lightning (1)
Chief Lightning has been flying at Wentworth Park, winning his last four in a row. He is still yet to miss a place in 22 starts, and while this will be his sternest test to date, his explosive early pace and great box draw should have him leading this field for a long way. He has two wins and three placings from five starts in box one, and the 450m of the Maitland Gold Cup heats should be ideal for him.

Race 9 –
Chief Lightning (1)
Form: 11111 | Career: 22: 13-2-7 | Trainer: Jason Magri
Race 11: Verdi (7)
Verdi has a great record of 15 wins from 27 starts, most of them on one-turn circuits similar to Maitland. He has eight wins in 12 starts from outside boxes and will use all the track early. He is a reliable beginner and runs fast times when he jumps well, so if he gets away cleanly, Verdi should be advancing to the Maitland Gold Cup final.

Race 4: Dawn Raider (8)
Dawn Raider has been winning in fine style at Maitland recently. He has a sizzling 22.18 personal best from box seven and should get full use of the centre of the track early with some moderate beginners under him. With a clean getaway and a fast track, he might even be a chance of breaking the magical 22-second mark.
