Boom Youngster Does It For Charity After Breaking Cannington Record
It will pay to remember the name Miata, as this virtually unknown greyhound made a few jaws drop after recording a dazzling 29.86 around Cannington's 530m journey.
The fantastic run erases Velocette's name from the record books, and the 29.92 run set back in the 2009 Perth Cup series.
If you can't remember seeing such a maniac performance during the usual high money Saturday night fixture, it is because it took place during a Grade 5 final on a Wednesday meeting last week.
Starting from box five, the small-framed, red-fawn bitch began fairly and got somewhat bumped before gaining the upper hand entering the back straight. From there the margin just increased with every bound and once the clocked had stopped, such a margin was understandable.
The future looks exceptionally bright when considering it was only Miata's third start, but it will be her fourth that will carry more pressure than any. In a greatly generous move, Greyhounds WA will donate $5000 to the Centre for Cerebral Palsy, if Miata can make it four wins from four starts.
Returning to Cannington for Race 7 this Wednesday night, the midweek magician will start long odds-on in the Grade 5 event, and if she can lower her new record time standard in the process, the donation will be doubled, making the race potentially worth $10,000 for charity.
So what do we know about this potential powerhouse of W.A racing? She's an October '09 daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Winsome Bluebird owned by Nichole Wheeler-Whye. Training duties have been given to Paul Stuart, who is fortunate enough to add Miata to a kennel already containing the all-conquering Pedrosa.
Miata's first start, and maiden victory, was back on May 25th where she won by twelve lengths in 30.18, before taking a two-month spell. Her return was just as successful when winning start number two by seven lengths in 30.21 on July 27.
That was all the preparation needed for last week's record breaking effort and hopefully this week's race for the title of Cerebral Palsy ambassador.
Celebrating its 60th anniversary, The Centre for Cerebral Palsy is located in the suburb of Coolbinia, just north of Perth, and has had a long-standing association with Greyhounds W.A.
This specific pledge will add to the publicity gathered by Cerebral Palsy Awareness Week which took place between August 1-7.
