Brisbane Greyhounds Set For Record Turnover

The is predicting record attendance and gambling turnover for this year's Winter Chasing Carnival despite the economic doom and gloom.

General manager said TOTE turnover and attendances had been increasing at the Brisbane Club and he expected the upcoming Winter Carnival to follow suit.

The Sky Channel Winter Chasing Carnival takes place over seven weeks at Albion Park in Breakfast Creek, starting with the $74,000 One on Thursday night, 4 June.

“We have been experiencing fantastic results at the track, particularly on gambling turnover, which in the past has indicated a great Winter Carnival to come,” Mr Gatehouse said.

“There are some great greyhounds going around at the moment, and this always draws the big crowds also,” he said.

“Add that with a lot more people getting into ownership syndicates of the dogs and I think we will find this Carnival to be one of our best yet.”

In the past few months the Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club has experienced an increase on on-course turnover of near 30 per cent. Crowds and functions bookings have also experienced a spike at the Club.

Mr Gatehouse said it seemed people were opting for more ‘laid back' entertainment due to the recession, which gave the Club a great edge.

“The dogs are a unique entertainment option,” he said. “Action packed with races every 20 minutes, the colours on the dogs remains the same in each race, and there are only eight in each.”

“You don't have the pressure of forking out on an outfit either, and I think this is an attractive quality to having a night out at the races.”

The Club has also added an extra incentive to those who are unfortunate on a bet, by holding a losing ticket competition on each major night of the Carnival, to go into the draw to win a $500 bet on the feature race of the night.

The Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club was established in 1974 at Woolloongabba, and later relocated to the Ruzz Hinze Government-built Albion Park Raceway to make way for The Gabba in 1992.

Mr Gatehouse said the Club was attracting both new crowds, as well as a number of people who can remember the ‘Gabba days'.

“It is truly fantastic to have people come back to the dogs, and hear the stories about how the punters use to terrorise the bookies at the Gabba,” he said.

“And the younger generation love it as well, because there is never a shortage of someone with a ‘hot tip' and a story of the ‘Gabba days' upstairs.”

The Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club is one of the most raced at tracks in Australia, racing Monday to Thursday every week, with Thursday their flagship meeting.
