Cool Flight’s 2009 Richmond Derby

The scratching of pre-race favourite Thai Alert didn't hamper the quality on offer for Greyhound Racing Club's night of nights with managing to run down serial One finalist , scoring a tenacious victory in the feature Group Two World 4 Pets Richmond Derby over 535 metres on night.

A dropped back muscle on Wednesday robbed the $2.70 favourite Thai Alert of completing his group mission and cast in doubt his racing future. Brother replaced him at the top of the betting at a $3.40 quote with Cool Flight ($4.50) and Ticabond heavily supported to give the giant black sprinter a hard time out in front.

Flying the boxes, Snozz ($5.20) overcame an awkward middle box to into the first bend from Cool Flight and Repeated, which had hunted over from box eight to sit dangerously near the speed. Rounding the first bend, Repeated found all sorts of trouble to be shunted back near last as the event became a race in two with Snozz holding an advantage over Cool Flight.

Charging into the home bend, Cool Flight mustered a final challenge on Snozz and ran past him to record a 30.81 second victory by half a length. Mutt Lange ($37.40) closed hard late to only be a quarter of a length adrift in third with race favourite Repeated finishing last after suffering heavy interference.

Earlier in the evening, boom staying prospect Forty Twenty delivered the first of many stunning performances over 700 metres when he equalled the 717 metre track record held by , stopping the clock at 41.85 seconds as an emphatic eight and half length winner. Quite a performance seeing it came in a lowly fifth grade event and was the dog's first attempt over the staying journey.

After the placings the field finished in the following order 4th Awesome Hustler ($29.40), 5th Branded ($5.20), 6th Ticabond ($6.30) 7th Bului Tulumi ($53.00) and Repeated ($3.00).

Cool Flight is raced by W Zahra, S Swain & K Neels and trained by Sid Swain. He is a Black Dog whelped February 2006 by Big Daddy Cool from Winnie La Plume (Proper Tears x Sun La Plume) he has raced 38 times for 14 wins and five placings and with the $25,000 first prize for the Derby his overall stake earnings went to $59,460.
