Eagle Eye Swoops Again

Master Penguin trainer has unearthed some outstanding chasers over the years and the flying Eagle Eye is no exception.

At the Tote Racing Centre on Monday night the rising four-year-old continued on his winning way by taking out the Jet Pats Animal Invitation as a well supported $2.80 commodity.

By from the proven producer Copper Delight, Eagle Eye has now won 39 of 123 lifetime outings while accumulating a purse of in excess of $90,000 and his career is far from over.

“It might be said that 123 starts is a lot for a greyhound, but this fellow just loves racing and is as as ever,” Deverell explained this week.

“I don't trial him and give him very little work, virtually all he does is race and he loves every minute of it.”

Eagle Eye will contest the Devonport Cup heats next week and while in his current form the veteran chaser will give plenty of cheek.

Deverell has enjoyed great success with members of this particular dynasty in recent years with Copper Delight's litter-sister Edan Rose having produced the standouts and Akker Boy, both winners.

“Akker Boy also raced until he was over four-years of age so it appears that the breed just keeps on keeping on,” he said.

Meanwhile Port Sorell trainer Tony Hoyland will also contest the Devonport Cup heats with his well performed chasers Smokin Gonzales and How Many Times.

The former Queenslander has enjoyed great success since relocating to Tasmania a couple of years ago and in Smokin Gonzales he has a greyhound with above average ability.

The son of Collide has won four of five outings at Park including the and at his first start at the Devonport Raceway on Tuesday afternoon he prevailed in the Hankook Tyres Grade 4 event as a heavily supported $1.60 chance.

Smokin Gonzales has now won nine of 23 lifetime starts while taking a purse of in excess of $13,000 and has drawn the coveted red box on Tuesday afternoon.

How Many Times, a daughter of Surf Lorian has won seven of 32 lifetime starts for Victorian owner Phillip Farrugia and has drawn the pink box in her Devonport Cup heat.

“I reared Smokin Gonzales for Victorian owner Michael Wallworth and he commenced racing in Victoria, but was sent back to me to contest the Breeders Classic series and the Devonport and Cups,” Hoyland explained.

Hoyland has also enjoyed success as the owner-trainer of Smokin Gonzales litter-sister Botox, which will contest the upcoming Breeders Classic series at the Tote Racing Centre in Launceston.

The trainer has a small team of six greyhounds in work at Port Sorell but has been a regular in the winners circle since relocating to his well complex.
