Greyhound racing community asked to dig deep for Dave & Jeanette

THERE are calls for the greyhound racing community to band together and help after two NSW participants were involved in a horrific car accident earlier this month.

Dave and Jeanette Burgess, from Arcadia Vale, were travelling on their way to on May 10 when their car was struck head on along the M1 expressway.

Both were left with serious injuries – Dave was taken to the Royal Shore Hospital and Jeanette transported to John Hunter Hospital.

With both expected to be in hospital for a lengthy amount of time, fellow trainer and friend Paula Tooth, from Clarence Town, explained it is going to be a while before the couple are back on their feet.

“At about 4.50pm they were travelling on their way to the dogs and they were involved in a head-on when a guy came from the opposite side of the freeway and hit them – leaving them both with horrific injuries,” Tooth told Australian Racing Greyhound.

“They are not doing too bad at the moment, Dave is back at the John Hunter and they are both in the same ward but it is going to be a long and hard road to recovery for them.”

After hearing about the accident, Tooth made the decision to start a fundraiser in the hopes of raising enough money to ease the financial burden placed on the Burgess' during their recovery.

“Jeanette was a bit worried about what they were going to do as she has had to take holidays and long service leave off work.

“I got onto Sonia Greene and her daughter Belinda and we decided to do whatever we can to help them out.

“We just wanted to put their minds at ease so they weren't stressing out about money and so they could just focus on getting better.”

Tooth said they are in the midst of arranging a fundraiser night at and are finalising the major prizes for some raffles which are also set to raise money.

“We are planning a big night for them at The Gardens on July 23rd, although that date is still to be confirmed.

“We are also holding a couple of raffles and we already have some free services to Shoulders and Hay Fergus courtesy of Debra and Brett May, while we also have a straw to which has been donated as well as a free implant.

“Richard Vrckoff has also donated a pup and we also have some other non-greyhound related prizes including a 43-inch TV from the Good Guys.

“These guys are really going to need our help so we would love to reach $20,000 for them – that would be awesome.”
