The New South Wales Greyhound As Pets (GAP) program held a successful adoption day at the Showgrounds over the weekend, with 15 greyhounds finding homes for the festive season.

This special event took place alongside the Dapto Christmas Markets on Saturday, December 16, and drew a good crowd from the Illawarra region.

According to , CEO of Greyhound Racing New South Wales (), it had been five years since they last organised a GAP adoption event at the Dapto Showgrounds.

With the turnout and positive outcome, Macaulay has pledged to hold more greyhound adoption events in the region.

“We were absolutely delighted that 15 families will have a new greyhound pet in their homes for Christmas, and also that many, many more people showed great interest on the day, which may convert to even more new homes for our wonderful dogs in the region,” he said.

The event proved to be one of the most successful of 2023 for GAP along with the Adoption Day in April and the Tim Cahill Winter Adoption Day in August.

Among those who found loving homes were Melon, Jacaranda, Ashy, Vee, Rhonda, Giblet and Crackers — as well as King, who was adopted half an hour before the event began.

AustralianRacingGreyhound recommends only using official greyhound adoption programs when looking for a retired greyhound.

Official adoption programs can be found in each state in Australia.
